Coonamessett Eco Cross

Coonamessett Farm, Cape Cod, November 9, 2003

Coonamessett Eco Cross draws strong support, praise

Heritage Series takes shape

by Whittey Bouchard

Round 2 of the Heritage Series saw cross riders descend to the Coonamessett Farm on Cape Cod - proceeds from the race are to be used to support People Cycle's Junior Development Team in 2004. Competitors were treated to crisp, sunny weather, and what was being described as a very traditional and technical cross course over the entire 12 acre farm. The course seemed to offer something for everyone: plenty of running, including a 2 1/2 foot high stone wall, a hard run-up, and a final set of barriers, a fast climb to the finish, hard packed roads, numerous twists and turns and a quick drop into a sand pit. All this led to exciting racing and fast lap times between 4-5 minutes.

Racing kicked off with the beginner men and women. After an early crash at the start, the men settled into a hard fought race between Matt Stover, local rider Gary Cundiff and Stephen Kelley. Cundiff rode strong, but a dropped chain on the finish climb saw his victory evaporate just seconds before victory; Stover capitalized on the mechanical taking the race. On the women's side, Tracy Elmes edged Heather Owens for the victory, but Owens' second place finish pushed her into the series lead.

The Masters 35+ event went off more smoothly than the C's and proved to be a show of utter domination by local Corner Cycle rider Jonny Bold and Gear Works Mike Bernard. After an initial close fight between the two riders, Bold, a National pro triathlete champion in his 20's, dropped the hammer and decimated the race. Bold cruised to victory with a 43 second advantage over Bernard, who was a further minute ahead of Paul Lynch in third.

The Amateur B men took the course just after noon and saw another close battle between four riders, first time local Dan Gagliarde, Ryan Rumsey, Tom Hopper and Matt Budd. In the end, the riders were stymied by the newcomer Gagliarde, who took the 15 second victory followed by Rumsey, Hopper and Budd. However, with his two podium finishes, Hopper took a narrow lead over Rumsey in the series. Honorable mention goes out to Intensepict's photographer Mike Morris, who rolled in at 15th place.

Prior to the Combined Open women's/junior race, the kid's took to a short, albeit challenging race course. Nine children, ages 6-9 lined up for 2 laps of the 400 meter course. Riding with the speed of pint-sized pro's the kid's blazed the course and offered action on par with the earlier races. Hat's off to all the participants: Catherine Cahabrese, Abigail Callahan, Luke Callahan, Ian Keough, Tommy Cundiff, Jackson Ryther and Cyrus Twombley.

With the kid's racing out of the way, the Juniors and Cub Juniors (U-15) lined up just ahead of the women. The junior's race, however, proved to be just a battle between two riders, Corner Cycle local Toby Marzot and Jamis/Portland Velo rider, Morgan Macleod. Marzot took the hole shot and opened up a 20 second advantage by half way through the first lap, but saw his advantage disappear as hard charging Macleod pulled level. Reminiscent of many of this season's cross races, the two riders went toe to toe throughout the remaining race. Despite putting Marzot "on the ropes", Macleod was unable to distance himself and ultimately fell short of the win after an untimely last lap mechanical. Marzot rolled in 20 seconds ahead of Macleod, with Noah Harwood rounding out the podium. Marzot still maintains his narrow lead on Macleod and Harwood in the series. While the shorter Cub race saw 7 riders line up, the race turned into a battle of brothers, as Nick and Luke Keough dominated the racing, with Nick taking a narrow 20 second victory over his younger brother Luke. Nick Keough now holds a commanding lead in the series. Finally, Jennifer Rhodes took a solid victory over Michelle Smith in the women's race.

Racing wrapped up with the Elite race, which turned into a showcase of CCB vs. Corner Cycle. The race saw Cape Codder Jeff Craddock (CCB) hammer the start, and after a close first 1/2 lap, Craddock rode away with Masters' winner Bold. While the two riders blitzed the first 6 laps, a battle for what looked like third shaped up between series and race promoter Chris Harnish (Corner Cycle) and the well known New England roadie Amos Brumble. Harnish held a 20 second advantage over Brumble for 5 laps, but Brumble came on strong after Harnish crashed mid-way through the race. Once caught, Brumble quickly distanced himself from Harnish. Up front, Craddock maintained an unrelenting pace that cracked Bold, who suffered from a "hunger knock" and lost ground quickly. Brumble capitalized on Bold's collapse, quickly catching him. As Craddock was well on his way to victory, the race for second came down to the wire; Harnish crossed the gap to Bold and then Brumble. Heading into the last barrier section, Harnish remounted quickly and narrowly passed Brumble as he remounted near the top of the run and attacked. At the finish it was Harnish, followed very closely by Brumble and then Bold; Connor Coffey rolled in for 5th.
