A day of surprises

Although the day started off cold at the San Diego Velodrome and the rains delayed some of the activities for a short time, the racing surely got everyone warmed up and gave them a reason to get out of their seats. With Sarah Uhl and Becky Quinn convincingly winning their qualifying Keirin heats, the spectators knew what to look for in the finals. With the motor gone and nothing to fight but the wind and each other, Quinn and Uhl did just that. All the way to the line Uhl pushed, managing to hold off a charging Quinn with Becky Conzelmen taking 3rd place. Quinn however was first to the line in the 15K scratch - the race in which she is the current US National Champion.

Marty Northstein was a force to be reckoned with in the men's keirin - winning his heat, the semis and the final. The big surprise of the day came from members of the U23 US national road team. To begin the day, National team members Tyler Farrar, Michael Creed and Mark Fitzgerald qualified 2nd, 3rd and 6th respectively in the men's pursuit. With Mike Tilman, the reigning national pursuit champ, qualifying first the 1-2 finals were set for Farrar and Tilman. In the afternoon session, the crowd was treated to a very close and exciting pursuit final. Looking for the upset, Farrar, just 19 years of age, lead 10 of the 12 laps before Tilman, was able to pull ahead in the last 500 meters to win the race.

Further surprises, came in the Men's scratch race when an early break of Mike Creed, Dan Larsen, and Joey D'antoni lapped the field. Many of the top contenders were down a lap at this point and not content to sprint for 4th. Quickly a group of the top riders including Nothstein, Colby Pearce, John Retseck, Tyler Farrar, and Eric Saunders formed. Creed quickly saw the threat of these riders and bridged solo to the group. Despite efforts from the tired pack, the break lapped the field putting Creed up 2 laps on the field. With just 4 laps to go, Pearce and Retseck attacked and worked together to maintain a quarter of a lap lead. In the final meters, Retseck came around Pearce to take 2nd.
