Friday Night Winter Track Racing week 11

39 riders greeted the starter in week 11 FNWTR. The fields being much smaller than usual due to major road races being held in Canberra (Junior 2 day tour) and the Nyngen to Dubbo Road Classic. Despite the lower numbers racing was very competitive with a number of riders relishing the absence of some of the more fancied riders allowing them to pick up valuable points on the series points table.
The women's racing featured 13 of NSW and Canberra's top riders. Rebecca Ellis again made the trek from Canberra to pick up 55 valuable points and Linda Hall made her comeback to track racing after an absence of some 2 years from the sport. Tanya Newton continues her excellent form picking up 44 points on the night whilst Sophie Cape showed a return to form picking up 39 points to keep her in touch with the two series leaders in Division 1. Amanda Whiteman made the most of her opportunities accumulating 40 points to move her to the top in Division 2 Women whilst Kelly Cox showed some good form to finish with 15 points on the night. The unluckiest rider on the night was Angela Keys who showed tremendous top end speed, only to be beaten by giving too much start to the leaders in her races.
Phil Dixon, Bicisport was overall winner in Men's division 1 taking two firsts and two second placings from four events. Close behind him was Masters World Championship medallist, Robert Upton who had his best night todate accumulating 46 points. Other consistent performances came from the Bicisport riders of David Browne, Stuart Millar and Patrick Naughton. Men's division two was a close contest with Masters Champions Jeff Smith (Penrith), Glen Ions and David South (Waratah Vets) taking out the top three honours on points. Steve Gilmore (Liverpool) and Bruce Masson (Hunter Districts) also rode strongly picking up valuable overall points.
Men's division 2a and 3 rode combined races due to the lower numbers participating. Young Scott Williams (Lidcombe) just edged out the old warhorse and tactician Michael Leach (Liverpool) for maximum points. Michael Popplewell continues to impress picking up 29 points for the night whilst the ever consistent "Blue's Bros" Jim and Hugh Gray are always thereabouts in the points at nights end.
The Handle Bar Tavern feature wheelrace for week 11 was won by Hugh Gray, just edging out Bill Cox (Hunter Districts) on the line with Michael Popplewell right on their wheels for a close 3rd.
Next weeks program (week 12) will feature some invitation match sprint races and the Men's division 1 Wheelrace of 5 laps.
