Morning session: Host nation shining already

By Karen Forman

The first round of the 2007 UCI Track World Cycling Cup is underway at Sydney's Dunc Gray Velodrome and already host country Australia has indicated it means business when it comes to grabbing those all-important points towards qualification for the Beijing Olympics.

Early qualifiers for the women's sprint saw world and Olympic time trial champion Anna Meares go through to the quarter finals with a solid 11.264 in the 200 metre time trial. The Toshiba team member then beat French rider Clara Sanchez in the quarter finals 2-0 (11.801 and 12.079) to make her way through to tonight's semi final.

Australian national record holder Katie Mactier will ride off for gold against Vilija Sereikaite in tonight's individual pursuit final after qualifying second with 3.36.784 behind the Lithuanian this afternoon.

The men's team sprint qualifier was won by the Australian Toshiba team of Ryan Bayley, Daniel Ellis, and Shane Kelly in 0.44.48 by 0.05 sec from the German team www.radnet.de comprising Robert Forstemann, Matthias John and Stefan Nimke. Australian national team Mark French, Shane Perkins and Scott Sunderland qualified sixth in 0.44.88

In the men's individual pursuit Australia's Drapac Porsche team member Phillip Thuaux qualified second in 0.04.23.10 and will face Voldoymyr Dyudya of the Ukraine in tonight's final.

Cameron Meyer qualified eighth in the first heat of the men's points race while Mark Renshaw went through in sixth in the second heat.

A total 395 riders have come to Sydney for the three-day event including 15 reigning world champions and all but three of last year's winners - the British team pursuit squad: Geraint Thomas and Paul Manning, the Madison champions Bruno Risi and Franco Marvulli, and British women's team sprint champion Shanaze Reade.

The increase in numbers from recent years is due to a new qualification system for the 2008 Olympics which gives automatic selection to individual World Cup winners as well as world champions.

Cycling Australia's high performance manager, Kevin Tabotta, said it was a good start, but that it was too early to speculate. "It's the first day of the first World Cup at the start of the season, where everyone gets to show their cards," he told Cyclingnews. "If we get good results it means we are on track; if not, then we have got time to improve things."

He said he expected the host country to be heavily challenged during the next three days. "We used to have 200 riders at a Sydney World Cup, but due to the Olympics we have 400, so there is a lot more competition. As well, we've had two considerations with our preparation - we have to get the results to qualify for Beijing, but also have to be fit to complete in Beijing. It's a fine balance. The fine tuning will come after the Worlds."

Tabotta said it was great, for a nation which has to travel most of the year, to be able to race at home. "This time the European teams get to experience what we do," he said.

Tonight's session, starting at 7pm, will feature finals for the women's individual pursuit, men's points race, women's scratch, men's team sprint and men's individual pursuit.
