Meyer bounces back from crash to win Oceania crown
West Australian Cameron Meyer won the points race at the Oceania Track Cycling Championships in dramatic style after crashing midway through the 120 lap race at Adelaide's Super-Drome.
"I was going all right in the first half of the race after myself, Sean Finning, James Langedyk and a Kiwi rider (Jason Christie) collected 20 points for lapping the field," said Meyer. "Then at the 50 lap to go mark I clipped CJ Sutton's wheel in a sprint and came down.
"I've hurt my left shoulder again but it's not dislocated this time and it should settle in the next few days but I've pulled out of today's team pursuit just to give it some time to recover before next week's Track World Cup in Melbourne," said Meyer, who dislocated the same shoulder in 2005 and earlier this year dislocated his right shoulder. He is also sporting some burns from sliding at speed on the wooden track surface.
The rules allow riders five laps to rejoin after a mechanical mishap or crash and Meyer was back in the race after five laps but unfortunately a broken pedal forced him into the pits and by the time he rejoined the field he had lost his 20 point lap gain.
"At 35 laps to go I attacked again and was away solo for 20 laps winning two sprints along the way and then eventually (10 laps from the finish) I caught the field and regained the lost 20 points," said Meyer who finished with 46 points, seven clear of second placed Langedyk on 39 points with Commonwealth Games Champion, Sean Finning, third on 31 points.
"It's not the nicest feeling (after a crash), the heart rate was going pretty quick but you just have to compose yourself when you get out there," said Meyer. "After the race I was pretty lightheaded but I've been through this a few times now."
In 2006 Meyer won three gold medals in the space of 24 hours at the Junior Track World Championships beginning with the individual pursuit title. Paired with his younger brother Travis for the Madison both brothers crashed but recovered to win the gold. However after the race Cameron spent the night in a Belgian hospital with concussion before being cleared to ride the team pursuit final the next day for his third gold medal.
The 20-year-old rising star, who finished fourth in the points race at the Olympic Games in Beijing and claimed the bronze medal in the U23 time trial at this year's road cycling World Championships, recently signed a two year contract with the Garmin-Chipotle professional road team.
The men's 4 km individual pursuit final was a battle between Olympians Jack Bobridge, 19, and Mark Jamieson, 24. Bobridge, the South Australian young gun, blasted out of the gate and proved too strong for the reigning Australian Champion, Jamieson, who was caught by his rival with six laps remaining of the 16 lap race. Bobridge rode on to record a time of 4.18.778. In the bronze medal ride Rohan Dennis (4.27.082) ensured an Australian clean sweep of the medals with his win against New Zealand's Jason Allen (4.31.664).
In other racing on day two of competition Canberra's Dan Ellis (Team Toshiba) fought back from being one down in his best of three final against Victorian Shane Perkins to win the sprint crown. Team Toshiba also scored bronze with WA's Scott Sunderland defeating team mate Jason Niblett (VIC) in straight heats. In the 200m qualifying round on Thursday Ellis had posted the second fastest time of 10.608sec while Perkins had claimed the top seeding in 10.377sec.
The women's open 3km team pursuit was easily won by the Australian trio of Ashlee Ankudinoff, 18, Sarah Kent, 18, and Josephine Tomic, 19. Ankudinoff won the individual pursuit at this year's junior World Championships ahead of Kent while Tomic was the 2007 junior World Champion and this year won the elite crown at the Australian Championships. The trio stopped the clock at 3min30.363sec, almost eight seconds faster than New Zealand's Sequoia Cooper, Penny Day and Lauren Ellis who rode 3min38.227sec for the silver medal.
There was more gold for Australia in the women's team sprint with Kaarle McCulloch (Team Toshiba) and Kerrie Meares joining forces to down New Zealand pair Natasha Hansen and Jocelyn Rastrick. The Australians posted a time of 34.730sec to the Kiwi's 36.047. Former short track speed skater, Emily Rosemond and junior rider Annette Edmondson won the bronze medal final in 36.034sec.
Tasmania's Laura McCaughey won the women's 10km scratch race ahead of Malindi Maclean (NZL) and Belinda Goss (AUS - Team Toshiba).
In the U19 men's sprint Northern Territory rider Maddison Hammond proved too strong for Jonathan Bathe with Australia also picking up third place through James Glasspool.
Australian U17 road time trial champion, Dale Parker, 16, (SASI -Team O'Grady) added the Oceania U19 individual pursuit title to his collection with a time of 3min24.621sec defeating West Australian Luke Durbridge, 17, (3min25.670sec). New Zealand's Hamish Tomlinson claimed bronze in 3min33.210sec.
New Zealand had some success through Natasha Hansen who won the women's keirin ahead of McCulloch and Rosemond.
The Oceania Championships is providing valuable competition experience ahead of next week's Melbourne round of the 2008-09 UCI Track World Cup Classics being staged at Hisense Arena from 20 to 22 November.
