Day 3 - July 2:

Kline and Reinert take title hattrick

By Andy Lee, USA Cycling Media

Shane Kline (Team Fuji-Salamander) and Nik Reinert (Team Fuji-Salamander) both came away with their third national titles of the week Monday as the 2007 USA Cycling Junior Track National Championships continued at the 7-Eleven Velodrome. Kline won the men's 17-18 sprint and later teamed up with Reinert to win the madison event, adding a second and third stars-and-stripes jersey to the one he won in Sunday's kilometre time trial. For Reinert, the victory in the madison complimented his earlier wins in the individual pursuit and the points race.

Kline posted the fastest time in the 200-metre qualifying round of the sprint, clocking a time of 10.685 seconds to surpass the time standard necessary for an automatic nomination to the world championship team that will represent the United States later this summer in Mexico. In the final, Kline lost the first head-to-head match in the best-of-three format to keirin winner Justin Williams (Rock Racing), but bounced back to take two consecutive wins for the overall victory.

In the 200-metre qualifying round, Williams also met the world team time standard, posting a time of 10.707 seconds. His time, along with his victory in the keirin on Saturday, will also earn him an automatic nomination to the world championship squad.

In the bronze medal match, David Engwis (Speed Zone) beat Lanell Rockmore (Young Medalist Cycling) in two straight rides to take third place.

In the madison, Kline and Reinert teamed up to lap the field and score 17 points to beat runner-up Team Rock, which consisted of Ignacio Silva and Williams, and the bronze medal team from AMD-Discovery Channel of Ben Barsi-Rhyne and Grant Boursaw.

Also contested on Monday was the women's 17-18 two-kilometre individual pursuit. With only two entries, Lauren Shirock (BMW Bianchi) clocked a 2:34.702 to win the gold medal over runner-up Morgan Farnsworth (Young Medalist Cycling), Shirock's time eclipsed the world team time standard of 2:35.024 and will also receive an automatic nomination to the world championship team.

In the final national title race of the evening, Catherine Fiedler (Home Depot Centre) outsprinted Colleen Hayduk and Dana Feiss in the finals of the women's 17-18 keirin to win her second national title of the week. Fiedler also won the scratch race on Saturday.

Four national titles were also decided after overall omnium points were tabulated in the 10-12 and 13-14 age groups. The men's 10-12 competition concluded with the two-kilometre scratch race in which Calan Farley (Young Medalist Cycling) rode to his third straight victory and earned the overall national title. With additional victories in the both the 500-metre time trial and the one-kilometre scratch race earlier in the week, Farley scored a total of 21 points to best silver medalist Chris Baranoski (Cycle Sport Zaveta), who finished with 15 and bronze medalist Noah Williams (GS Tenzing), who scored eight.

In the women's 10-12 two-kilometre scratch race, Sarah Huang (Kenosha Velosport) took the victory, but Sarah Chen (Home Depot Centre) held on to win the overall title with a second place effort. Chen also placed second in the 500-metre time trial and won the one-kilometre scratch race to score a total of 17 points. Huang finished second overall with 15 points while Tara McCormick won the bronze medal with 13 points.

In the women's 13-14 eight-kilometre points race, Karla Lopez (Major Motion) took the win, but finished the overall omnium competition in second place behind winner Hannah Hayduk (Team Fuji-Salamander). Hayduk's national title was a result of a fourth-place finish in the points race, plus a third-place effort in the 500-metre time trial and a win in the four-kilometre scratch race. Hayduk finished with 12 points ahead of Lopez, 11 and Kaitlyn Lawrence (Vortex), 11.

In the men's 13-14 omnium, Jesse Marans (Major Motion) finished on top with 19 points thanks to victories in the 500-metre time trial and four-kilometre scratch race, as well as a second-place effort in Monday's 10-kilometre points race. Nick Roeder (Bike Line) won the points race to secure second place overall with seven points ahead of third place finisher Amir Merali who notched six points.

In addition to the stars-and-stripes jersey, the overall omnium winners of the women's 10-12 and 13-14 categories were presented with brand new Felt track bikes by two-time World Champion Sarah Hammer during the awards presentation. Hammer will also present the women's 15-16 omnium winner and the top overall performer from the 17-18 age group with a Felt Bicycle on Tuesday.

The 15-16 categories also continued its omnium competitions as the women contested a six-kilometre scratch race. Jessica Prinner (Athletes by Design) sprinted to a win over Coryn Rivera (Kahala-LaGrange) and Mary Costelloe (East Coast Velo). The men contested an eight-kilometre scratch race that was won by Jacob Rathe (Beaverton Bicycle Club) over Daniel Heeley (Peninsula Cycle Club) and Kit Karzen (South Bay Wheelmen).
