Race 2 - July 8:

Racing heats up on day two of AVC

By Charlie Warner

On day two of the AVC, the temperatures cooled but the racing heated up. All events on the day were hotly contested. The elite men started the day with determining the seeding for the sprint rounds.

Matt Barlee (Fast Twitch) won the match sprint final against fellow Canadian Felix Haspel (Synergy Racing). Haspel made a spectacular move down Alpenrose's steep slope and started the sprint from one and a half laps out. But Barlee kept his cool and was able to come around Haspel to win.

In the mass start events, two pros Chad Hartley (BMC) and Jeff Hopkins (Jittery Joe's) won the ten-mile and miss-n-out respectively. Hartley was aggressive during the entire ten mile race which awarded money to the top two riders on each lap. Hartley attacked the field with several laps remaining and won easily. Hopkins put on a good show with fellow Australian Brad Payne (Team Rubicon) in the miss-n-out as they were separated by a mere three inches at the line.

Christopher Best (Team Dare) was hot in the masters field. He made a daring attack going into the final lap during the ten mile and held off David Klipper (Guiness Cycling) and Rick Adam (Easton/Specialized) to win the Masters 10 Mile in 22:38. Best also won the miss-n-out after Klipper was relegated in the sprint. Shaw's Garden City rider John Simmons won the keirin by leading the setting a strong pace after the motor left the track.

Cari Higgins (America's Dairyland) continued to impress as she won the women's miss-n-out, the keirin and was second in a tight points race. Kele Murdin (Team Ultralink) won the points race by two points over Higgins and three points over Jenn Wangerin (BBC).
