Keisse and Bartko regain the lead

On night three of the Gent six-day, the favorites put their cards on the table early in the night, and during the first Madison of the evening, Iljo Keisse and Robert Bartko set down a series of attacks that leaders Danny Stam and Peter Schep could not keep up with. They succeeded in taking back the lap they lost yesterday, and added another bonus lap on points gained. Meanwhile, consistent performances and a win in the second Madison of the evening moved Bruno Risi and Leif Lampater into second place ahead of Stam and Schep.

How it unfolded

Dimitri DeFauw and Wouter Van Mechelen took the opening event, the points race, while Isaac Galvez and Juan Llaneras showed a bit of speed by taking the team elimination. DeFauw and Van Mechelen had their third attempt at breaking the track record in the flying lap, but were still nearly a tenth of a second off the track record of 8.63 set in 2002 by Jean-Pierre Van Zyl. On night one, they came within 0.02 seconds of the mark.

In the first Madison of the night, Keisse began by countering an attack by Franco Marvulli, bringing Stam and Schep along for the lap, but not ten laps later, Risi, Galvez and Villa attacked and an attentive Bartko caught Schep off-guard and went across with Beikirch. This put the hometown team on the same overall lap as Stam and Schep. Keisse tried again to get away, but a furious chase by Risi/Lampater and Galvez/Llaneras brought them up to the Belgian's wheel.

Muller/Grassman scrabbled hard to get up to the breakaway, while DeFauw/Van Mechelen fell off the chase and went back to the field. Just as the break took their lap, a fatigued DeFauw tangled with Slovakian rider Jozef Zabka, and the pair took a nasty tumble down the banking. Both riders were able to walk away, and were back in the race. After the crash, racing resumed and once again Risi, Galvez, and Keisse were on the attack, and a tiring field could not bring them back before the final ten laps. In the final sprint, Risi led out, and a surging Franco Marvulli looked certain to take the sprint when Iljo Keisse came flying over the top out of the last turn, snatching the win and the lead in the overall.

The rest of the night's events did not affect the overall standings, but gave the lower placed teams a chance for glory. DeFauw and Van Mechelen again dominated the timed events, taking the 500m time trial over Keisse and Bartko. Muller and Grassman prevailed in the scratch race, and Van Mechelen took out the derny final.

Under-25 heats

In the first heat of the under-25's, the Germans once again dominated the race. The team of Arends and Mohs are clearly the heat 1 favorites, but the other teams are still racing aggressively. Tonight, Tobias Baumgartner (Swi) was the first to attack, and Leys (Bel) and Ranneries (Den) were quick to follow. But the German team cannibalized their move, catching and passing the trio, shattering the field on their way to gaining another lap. Burke and Bellis (GBr) and the Baumgartner brothers were the only ones to hold off getting lapped, but this would not last. As soon as Arends and Mohs caught the broken field, they went off the front straight away and stole a second lap. By the end, the Germans took another lap out of most of the field, with only the British duo holding them off and continuing to hold the sprint leaders jersey.

The second heat played out much in the same manner, with the German team of Kalz and Kluge once again in control. The real battle was going on for the sprint leaders jersey, with the Dutch pair of Lighthart and Vermeulen going head-to-head against the Czech duo Subrt and Mixa. The Czech pair were able to best the Dutch, and take the sprint lead by just one point. Friday's race will be a battle for the teams in the lower places, as only the top six teams in each heat will advance to the finals.
