Riders raise $6,000 for Crake

Looking trim, taut and totally T-mobile, Australian Tour de France hero Michael Rogers lobbed up in Goulburn on December 22 for his first serious track venture since the Sydney 2000 Olympics. The Dodger joined a host of Australian Capital Territory and New South Wales track stars at the special Goulburn Cycle Club meet to help raise $6000 for injured Canberra cyclist Paul Crake.
Rogers - who rode blistering turns in the six-lap and 8km scratch races on a borrowed bike - mingled with the crowd, happily signing autographs and offering advice to juniors in between events. He might have been the highest-profile rider at the meet, but it was Canberra-based flyer and NSW sprint champion Daniel Ellis who shared centre stage with the man in pink.
On a calm and balmy evening in Goulburn, Ellis smashed the Seiffert Oval flying 200m record, setting a new mark of 11.17 seconds. Four riders - all from the ACT - had a crack at the time set several years ago at 11.54 by Sydney speedster and US pro Jeff Hopkins. First up was Gary Ryan with 11.66, then Alex Bird broke it with a time of 11.53. Former World Junior Champion Kial Stewart was next, bringing it down to 11.25 before baby-faced assassin Ellis unleashed, shaving another eight-hundredths out of Stewart's time.
Various businesses from Canberra, Wollongong and Goulburn pledged $1600 to the Crake cause each time the Hopkins mark was broken. Suffice to say, a neat $4800 - or about $145 for each second's work - was raised from that event alone.

Ellis also won the A-grade 8km scratch race in nine minutes and 14 seconds, with Justin Tomlinson (Southern Highlands) taking second place.
Triple world road time trial champion Rogers successfully brought home the Canberra team in the four lap, four man Italian teams pursuit against some classy opposition from Goulburn/Southern Highlands. Rogers, Thomas Palmer, Ian Downing and Chloe Hoskings just nudged out the Goulburn/Southern Highlands quartet of Tomlinson, Graeme Allbon, Joseph Northey and Michelle Crawford.
Rogers and Tomlinson staged a thrilling duel on the last lap, with Dodger just getting the better of his younger rival, winning by the tyre width of four-hundredths of a second.
In other events on the night, Tomlinson won the six lap A-grade scratch race from Mathew Miesll-Dennis (ACT) second and Rogers third. Stewart dominated the A-grade keirin, with Bird second and Ellis third.

Adam Lambert (Goulburn) was the winner in the B-grade keirin, with Scott Evans (Goulburn) second and Glen Allbon (Goulburn) third.
Ben Mikic (Southern Highlands) won the junior division, with Jarrod Coveney (Goulburn) second and Mikaela Rose (Goulburn) third.
Women riders dominated the B-grade six lapper, with Crawford winning from Sinead Cosgrove (Goulburn) and Hoskings.
Mikic won the junior five lap scratch race from Coveney and Rose.
Keisha Northey (Goulburn) won the junior two lap handicap, with Rose second and Annika Brown (Goulburn) third.
In the senior road bikes Tim Evans took two wins with Geoff Arthurson and Martin Vaughan - all of Goulburn - both having one win each. Toby Cooke won three races in the junior road bikes, with Mitchell White closely following. Stephanie Rose took two third places with Holly Beard taking one.
In the junior road bike Italian pursuit, the winning team comprised Joshua Allbon, Holly Beard and Toby Cooke. The runner up team was Mitchell White, Cameron Davies and Stephanie Rose.
And in a close finish, Hoskings won the 15 lap B-grade scratch race from Crawford and Colin Balk (Southern Highlands). Organisers would like to thank Neville Burrows from the Goulburn City Motor Group and Bill Lambert from the Goulburn Barbeques Galore store who sponsored the flying 200 metre track record attempt. Greengrocer on Clifford, Goulburn, and Subway of South Goulburn were also generous supporters of the night.
