Friday Night Winter Track Racing

Dunc Gray Velodrome, Sydney, September 23, 2005

The final night had absolutely everything. With around 100 riders, including the return to Australia of David Wilmot and Peter Barnard sporting their World Title medals. Redbull where out in force energising the riders and the crowd. Added to this, the racing was truly spectacular.

The *Warm up scratch* races were all sensational but the Div 1's first race was probably the best scratch race I have seen since Shaun Hopkins won the Australian title in 2003. The Bicisport train formed with 8 laps to go, in their bid to launch Patrick Bolan for the win as well as the lead in FNWTR series. Speaking to a rider who had put his power cranks on for the night, he indicated to me that the speed over those last 8 laps never dropped below 60km/h. This made it very hard for riders to move up, but they tried. In the final laps Bolan showed the speed his team mates knew he had and held off all challengers except Peter Spencer who took a photo finish win.

The Feature race for the night was the *Campagnolo 1.5km wheelrace* with over $1500 worth of prizes up for grabs. Riders had to qualify for this race and we had 20 riders spread from 215m to Scratch.

Early in the race, Peter Spencer and Warren Scott made the junction to the rest of the Div 1 riders to form a hard working and determined chase group of 6 riders. Out front, Fuji boy Ben Elliot made his bid for the win, however, he tired with 2 laps remaining and Peloton Sports Graeme Tiereny took over the honours of leading the race.

On the bell Graeme was caught by the main body of riders with Scott Law and Carl Holleman coming over high against the fence. Behind this wall of riders was the quickly approaching scratch group.

With 200m to go, Law and Holleman had made the front but had also effectively freed up the track, opening a door for the fast moving scratch train to go high over the bunch. Peter Spencer then towed the intact line into the lead and managed to hold off the challenge of Warren Scott on the line.

Felice from Cycling Projects was on hand to make the presentation. He has once again shown his support to FNWTR and Australian Cycling, this time in the form of a first prize package of 1 set of Campagnolo Montreal rims with 32 holes built on a set of Campagnolo high flange track hubs. The wheels will be built by mechanic Bernard Devoy, using ACI Alpina spokes .The wheels are fitted with Veloflex Record clincher tyres. + Campagnolo polo shirt

Cycling Projects is the Australian distributor of Campagnolo, Veloflex Tyres and ZeroRh+ sunglasses. Felice, who has been a great supporter of FNWTR, invites all riders to visit the Campagnolo stand at the up-coming Bicycling Show (October).

The Big challenge for the night was battle between Central Coast and Waratah Vets for Team supremacy. After a sensational round 1 by Waratah Vets, the old guys took a significant lead of 30 points but Central Coast dominated rounds 3 and 4 and took out the series prize and trophy.

As with most weeks of FNWTR, we were treated with the *Tandem Sprints*. These have been a highlight for many of the spectators and of course our Paralympic hopefuls. FNWTR has already help support the training of no less the 6 Paralympic medalists.

To honour our brand new World Champions we hosted a special display sprint between World Masters Sprint champion David Willmot and World Masters Time Trial Champion Peter Barnard, much to the delight of everyone in attendance.

Rounds 3 and 4's *Win'n'Out's* and *Mystery lappers* were all spectacular however much interest was in the final race as is the case whenever we run the *CNSW time blaster*.

This time, riders had to average over 51km/h to secure the time of 8 minutes 45 seconds for the 7.5km race. The riders started well as a team and quickly built up to a hefty speed of 54km/h when there was an unfortunate clip of wheels sending 5 riders to the ground - Michael Popplewell, Justin Tomlinson, Peter Spencer, Christopher Young and Paul Bayley. Of these riders only Popplewell was unable to remount his bike.

The restart saw the riders go at it again but after 10 laps had fallen 4 seconds behind the required schedule. But with determined riding, the committed group brought that deficit back to just 2 seconds after 20 laps. At this point the remaining riders dug deep, inspired and driven on by Justin Tomlinson who had earlier been involved in the fall. Coming into the last two laps it was touch and go as to whether the riders could make the time limit. The crowd rose to their feet, screaming encouragement to Warren Scott and Justin Tomlinson as they both sprinted in the final lap in desperation for the win. Warren Scott crossed first and stopped the clock at 8 minutes and 43 seconds.

Once again, my sincere thanks to all of you who have supported FNWTR throughout 2005. I hope we can do it all again next year.
