Lehigh Valley International Race Season #3

Lehigh Valley, PA, Friday, June 18, 2004

T.E.A.M. Fuji Duo of Lea/Wamsley Take Mid-Atlantic Madison Championship

By Jacob Burns

Friday, June 18 marked the third installment of the 2004 International Race Season at the Lehigh Valley Velodrome with the Madison Challenge. Winners for the night included Becky Conzelman (Frisco Cycling Club), Ashley Kimmet (Colavita-Bolla), Jame Carney (Northwestern Mortgage), Andy Lakatosh (Tri-State Velo), and T.E.A.M. Fuji's Kyle Wamsley and Bobby Lea, who won the night's feature event, the Mid-Atlantic Madison Championships.

The Women's 30-Lap Points Race was a close race between Becky Conzelman and Ashley Kimmet Conzelman won the event, with Kimmet in second, and Veronica Martinez in third. Conzelman dominated the sprints, with three wins.

Surprisingly, Becky Conzelman, the winner of the 30-Lap Points Race, was the first rider to exit the Women's Miss-and-Out. Ashley Kimmet captured the win as she edged out Graciela and Veronica Martinez, who won second and third place, respectively.

The Men's Miss-and-Out was a clean sweep for Jame Carney, who managed to play the devil card for a great deal of the race and edge out Mike Friedman in all out sprint. Mike Friedman placed second in the event, while Kyle Wamsley (T.E.A.M. Fuji) took third.

After a series of heats and semi-finals, the Men's 500m Final got underway but Carney wasn't able to stay at the head of the pack. Andy Lakatosh (Tri-State Velo) won a very close race against fellow sprinter Ben Barczewski (East Coast Velo).

The last women's event for the night was the One-Mile Final. Becky Conzelman and Ashley Kimmet again competed against each other for the entire race. At the end, Conzelman took the win, overtaking Kimmet by only a spoke. Kim Geist (East Coast Velo) was close behind Conzelman and Kimmet for a third place finish.

The Mid-Atlantic Madison Championships, the last event for the evening, was a sure victory for T.E.A.M. Fuji's Kyle Wamsley and Bobby Lea. Wamsley and Lea, who won the event in 2003, finished with a total of 26 points. Second place went to Northwestern Mortage's Jame Carney and Dave Bailey, who walked away with 14 points. Finishing in third, Mike Friedman and Gui Nelessen ended with 12 points.
