CI Summer Track League #14

August 21, 2004

Final round of Summer Track League

By Shane Stokes

The fourteenth and final round of the CI Summer track league took place at Sundrive road on Saturday, with Will Byrne (Hillcrest Hire-Kilcullen) and Paddy Davis (Usher IRC) coming out on top in the Elite 1 and Elite 2 categories respectively.

Over 100 riders took part in the races over the summer, with ninety of these participating in the league. Races included points, scratch, devil, win & out, team Olympic sprints and Italian team pursuit races. Each of the rounds featured five races for every group, finishing with a one lap handicap event. Riders scored 1 point for signing on and the first three in each race took five, three and one point respectively.

Byrne amassed a total of 94 points in the Elite 1 standings, with Justin McGee (DHL Wallcycles) second on 66 and Paul Doyle (Bua Sports) on 59.

Davis was dominant in the Elite 2 competition, leading from start to finish and ended up with 71.5 points, 23.5 ahead of Murphy and Gunn's Colin O'Connor. James Lattimore (Usher IRC) was third on 44 points, having been upgraded to Elite 1 during the league.

The Elite 2 races saw over fifty riders battle it out. Terry Ferris (Murphy and Gunn) took a late win to nab the unplaced veteran prize from Liam Walker (Hillcrest Hire Kilcullen). Kate Rudd (Dundrum Shopping Centre Orwell Wheelers) rode well against the men and was first lady, while James Whelan (McNally Swords CC) and John Monaghan (unattached) were best junior and first unplaced senior 3. Monaghan was also named the most aggressive rider of the league. Diarmuid Cronin (Usher IRC) and Chloe Farrell (Hillcrest Hire Kilcullen) were best of the underage riders.
