Day 2 - July 7

Geist two for two

After Wednesday's opening night session offered up success for local riders, day two of the 2005 Junior Track National Championships saw a little more geographic diversity on the top step of the podium on Thursday night, but the headliner was still homegrown as Kimberly Geist (Emmaus, Pa.) locked up her third national title of the year with a win in the junior women's 17-18 individual pursuit.

After a win in Wednesday's scratch race, Geist is well on her way to defending the three junior national titles she won in 2004 as a 17-year-old. To complete her hat-trick, Geist will need to win the points race on Friday.

In Thursday's gold medal heat, Geist was paired with last year's silver medalist Natalie Klemko (Bristol, Wis.). Geist clocked a time of 2 minutes, 35.30 seconds - good enough for the win, but narrowly off the 2:35.024 pace that would have given her an automatic nomination to the world championship team that heads to Austria in August.

After landing on the podium in every event in 2004 without a national title, Klemko finally was awarded a stars and stripes jersey after she outsprinted last night's 500 meter time trial winner Cindy Lakatosh (Trexlertown, Pa.) in a photo-finish finale in the junior women's 17-18 keirin.

In the men's 17-18 pursuit final, Daniel Holloway (Morgan Hill, Calif.) improved upon his silver medal performance in 2004 with a win over last year's men's 15-16 omnium champion Cody O'Reilly (Santa Barbara, Calif.). Holloway posted a time of 3:42.60 to better O'Reilly by nearly three seconds.

In the men's 17-18 kilometer time trial, Spencer Hartfeld (Santa Barbara, Calif.) clocked a time of 1:08.70 to post the fastest time and take the title ahead of Matthew Fox (Highland Park, Ill.).

In the younger category races on Thursday, three riders further solidified their overall omnium leads with their second wins in as many nights.

Catherine Fiedler (Long Beach, Calif.) added a win in the women's 15-16 500 meter time trial to last night's victory in the scratch race.

Last night's winner in the men's 15-16 scratch race, Shane Kline (Bally, Pa.), also doubled up with a win in the 500 meter time trial.

Matthew Baranoski (Perkasie, Pa.) took his second win of the week with a win in the men's 10-12 1km scratch race after taking a similar victory on Wednesday in the 2km scratch race.

Other winners on Thursday included Coryn Rivera (Tustin, Calif.) in the women's 13-14 points race and Alan Ting (Spring, Texas) in the men's 13-14 points race.
