Yasumitsu-Schlapp track racing

Manchester, May 29, 2004

Tandem frenzy

A fantastic night's racing at the Manchester Velodrome in the Yasumitsu-Schlapp organised race meet could not help Hutchinson go any faster in his attempt on the World Hour record. Still, the small crowd of spectators were treated to the brilliant sight on 12 tandems battling it out in the Air Products/ Access for All tandem omnium. The flying 200m saw the Brits - Storey/Gordon stamp their authority with a scintillating 10.8 to the French Olympic selection of 10.9. The first round of sprints also bore some of the best tandem sprinting seen in the UK for years with a fast and tough battle between Storey/Gordon and the French sprint specialists with the GB team coming out on top. GB's other sprint selection, the all-women Ellen Hunter/ Aileen McGlnn gave the men something to think about with a spectacular display of sprinting prowess and tactical brilliance. Former GB tandem ride Dave LeGrys was also having fun with his partner Carol Walters and left the track every race with a huge grin!

"It's been really good and we've had a lot of fun" Dave explained. "Great to see all these tandems here with all the GB teams going so well too". GB came out on top in the 2000m pursuit with a rapid ride [2m .16] by Paul Hunter/Ian Sharpe, the GB olympic tandem pursuit team winning from GB tandem hour record holder Zac Carr and his wife Beverly and Norway's Tho/ Eriksen. The overall omnium winners were Storey/Gordon who pocketed the ukp200 first prize. Hunter/Sharpe were second with France third.

The Men's keirin proved a fast and furious affair too with Mathew Haynes beating Dave Heald and World 'B' keirin medallist Ray Clarke [Ire] in a well deserved 3rd. Women took to the boards as well with Jacqui Marshall going home somewhat more richer than she arrived after some fast and furious races.
