Now it's Australia's turn

More than 75 companies representing over 500 brands made the trip to Melbourne Exhibition Center for the 2002 Bicycling Australia Show to give Aussie retailers and consumers a chance to look, feel and ride the bikes that will be available this coming season. Local and international brands all took turns to grab centre stage in the hope that they will be seen as the one with the must-have item once it becomes available.

Importers and distributors are putting a lot more work into their display stands of late, with a number of stands moving from the "place bikes in a row" style of a few years ago to the "let's really show these babies off" style that wins awards. And the best stand of the show award went to Giant Australia, who not only put up a great display, but also had on show a number of new models that should excite the punters.

With the show split as always with days one and two trade only, there was certainly a feeling of business as usual, but with more bikes on show from even more brands, retailers were having a tough time deciding what products would be sitting on shelves. And come Saturday it was the always-popular Public Day, allowing the general public into the show for a look at what's hot, and if you were lucky, a chance to ride it. And if that didn't tire you, then the displays of BMX dirt-jumping and MTB trials left you gasping, especially with the trials riders trying to beat the world record for bunny hopping as well as trying to beat each other's gap jumps.

Next year the show returns to Sydney, where it's expected to exceed all previous attendance records. And who knows what new bikes will be released in that time.
