25th Annual Old Capitol Criterium and Chris Lillig Memorial Cup

Iowa City, Iowa, May 5, 2002

By Rick Paulos
This annual bike race & dog show was run under beautiful skies this year. But there were certainly many fewer dogs this year. Some of the highlights of the races were watching Greg Harper, Dan Hill, Rick Hopson and Charlie Townsend rocket off the front of the masters race in the first lap. Road race finishers, Hopson & Hill only stayed with the fresh Harper & Townsend for a few laps. The duo soon laped most of the field and Townsend used some dormant BMX skills to sprint on the curb at the finish and take the win.

The womens race saw Katie Weber riding for Team Mack ride away from the pack and lap everyone. Especially impressive after being late for the saturday road race and having to race with the cat threes for a few laps.

The Pro 1 & 2 race was the usual powerfest. Robbie Ventura was the only guy I saw who sat up on the up hill every lap to look around at everyone else. He just cruised. Robbie and three others lapped the field with little trouble and finished with the pack. Teammate Kenny Labbe worked hard for Robbie in the last few laps. No McCartney this year as the late date of the race was a conflict with the Gila in Arizona. Ventura was awarded his prizes and a large silver cup by Chris Lillig's family.

By Kenny Labbe (US Postal Service)
US Postal Service Pro Cycling Team member Robbie Ventura spent his thirty-first birthday winning the 25th annual Old Capitol Criterium in Iowa City, IA. The event is dedicated to Chris Lillig, a club racer killed training six years ago by a drunk driver. The event is one of the first annual events in the Midwest criterium racing season. Approximately 70 riders started the pro-am event in perfect weather, cloudless sky and temperatures in the upper 70's. Many University of Iowa students lined the streets, adding to the festive spirit.

The event is extensively covered by local media. Robbie's win confirms his return to action after suffering extensive shoulder injuries in a California race in late March. As defending champion, it was my pleasure to support Robbie in his victory on his very special day.

Respectfully,
Kenny
