Shelby Criterium

Mercury came to Shelby looking to continue its recent roll of good results. In one of the fastest races of the year, Mercury made all of the right moves, but it was Shroeder's Jamie Paolinetti who came away with his second consecutive win.
With 10 laps to go, a group of four riders went clear. Paolinetti, Mercury's Gord Fraser, Mark Walters (Navigators) and Alex Candlearia (Prime Alliance). The group quickly got a gap of 21 seconds with only Paolinetti and Fraser doing the work. Behind most teams seemed content to see who would take up the chase.
It was Prime Alliance who eventually came to the front. Unfortunately they were not able to bring back the group on the windy course, as the lead was still 17 seconds with two laps to go. After a brief hesitation by Fraser, who wanted Walter to pull through, Paolinetti kept going and he was not coming back. The Navigators came to the front on the last lap, but it was too late.
Paolinetti took the win with Mercury's Derek Bouchard-Hall taking 2nd in the filed sprint for third overall.

The Navigators Cycling Team returned from Europe for a brief stay. Eager to compete again on US soil, a small squad headed for Shelby, North Carolina for the next stop on the National Race Calendar, while the balance of the team rested up for the trip back to Europe next week. Olympic Champion Marty Nothstein, racing at his first event in America in the Navigators colors, was joined by Canadian National Champion Mark Walters, sprint aces Oleg Grichkine and Vassili Davidenko, and Aussie strong man Tom Leaper. Although outnumbered by larger Mercury, Prime Alliance, and 7-Up squads, the Navy lads were ready for aggressive racing. The 60 lap, 8 turn, 3/4-mile circuit could favor a tight breakaway, although the event has often finished in a field sprint.
Large and frequent preme laps kept the race fast and exciting from the start, and the field remained strung out for most of the race. Several breakaway attempts were short lived until Navigators' Tom Leaper broke solo about 22 laps in. Gaining nearly 30 seconds, Leaper's threat started looking more serious with each lap, and the field was losing valuable preme opportunities, so eventually it was Mercury who took control and worked hard to bring Leaper back into the fold. As Leaper was slowly reeled in, Navigators counter-attacked with Mark Walters and various teams immediately started sending riders across. As the lead group reached nearly 20, Navigators had placed four in the front group. Bad chemistry within the break hindered their progress and a huge effort from the field by Saturn's Eric Wohlberg finished the job.
Subsequent attacks and counters would prove fruitless until four riders escaped with 14 laps to go. Again it was Walters who started things off, and he was quickly joined by Mercury's Gord Fraser, Prime Alliance's Alex Candelario, and defending champion Jamie Paolinetti from the Schroeder Iron team. The 7-Up squad was now on the hook as they had no representation, but it was Prime Alliance who took up the chase, hoping for better odds with sprinters Jonas Carney and Dave Mc Cook still in the field. The break was at 25 seconds, and the gap was coming down slowly. Walters was doing a minimal amount of work, with the Navigators happy to contest a field sprint if necessary. The gap was down to six seconds with three laps to go when Paolinetti attacked the break and went solo. Fraser was caught off guard, and Walters was gapped.
The Navigator train was forming now with just under three to go, and the small squad needed Walters help, so rather than pursue Paolinetti, he dropped back to help the lead-out. It was too late, however and as the "men in blue" drove towards the finish, Paolinetti raced desperately for the line. Grichkine released Davidenko coming out of the last turn, and the "Russian Rocket" powered into the sprint hot on the Shroeder Iron man's heals. At the finish it was Paolinetti by three bike lengths with Davidenko winning the field sprint and Mercury's Derek Bouchard-Hall in third.
