16th Giro del Friuli

May 11, 2002

By James Victor

Three new Australian riders arrived in Italy last week and took part in the their first race with the A.I.S. Australian team in Friuli on Saturday. The Giro del Friuli was held in the north-east area of Italy, near the Slovenian border, under overcast conditions, after most of Italy had experienced a considerable amount of rain throughout the past week.

100 riders took the start, with the course presenting 2 climbs that would determine the outcome of the lead group for the finish in Aiello del Friuli. On the first climb of the day the agressor was 2000 world road champion Zinaida Stahurskaia, who rode strongly throughout the race to eventually take the win by 8 seconds from fellow breakaway companions Rosalisa Lapomarda and Jolanta Polikeviciute.

The Australians were constantly on the attack towards the latter stages, endeavouring to get someone clear for 4th place. Naomi Williams escaped at 8km remaining and held a 400 metre gap on the group, until being caught at 600 metres from the finishing and finishing in the group. All Australians finished with the main group sprinting for 4th place at 3m30s in arrears, with only 29 riders finishing the course.
