Carrick Hotel Challenge Cup

Carrick on Suir, March 17, 2003

O'Loughlin makes it three in a row

By Tommy Campbell, Irish Independent/Evening Herald/Sunday Independent.

You would have to go back a long time, for anybody here in Ireland to notch up three wins against class opposition.

David O'Loughlin the Ofoto Lombardia professional, duly obliged as favourite yesterday when he won the Carrick Hotel Challenge Cup, thus proving that he is certainly the form cyclist of the moment. Conditions were ideal for the 60-mile event held over 5 laps of a 12-mile course. From the outset it was fast and furious and on the first lap 30 had moved ahead which included all the fancied candidates. Also amongst this group was a surprise entrant, Ciaran Power who is attached to the Navigators team in America. Ciaran has been racing in Europe and took the opportunity to spend some time home in Waterford this weekend.

For the next two laps this select pack stayed together, but on the third passage through the town of Carrick-on-Suir, Eddie O'Donoghue, Timmy Barry and Kieran McMahon moved ahead. Going out on the final passage it looked as though the trio had sewn up the event, as there was inactivity from the chase group. Evidently the sound of the bell for the final lap stirred them into action, but when the junction was made with three miles to go it was O'Loughlin who was in control. He just upped the pace and went to clear to register his third victory on the trot. "With seven miles to go I sensed that time was running out and along with Ciaran we got clear, but unfortunately he punctured and this left me with a lot to do before I hauled back the trio and as soon as I made the junction, I just forged ahead. The start to the season has been great and with three successive wins in the bag, I'm pleased," said David who next returns to his team in San Francisco.
