Clarke takes Big Sunday

By Mal Sawford

Monster fields in A and B Grade with over 170 riders across all grades. Brief details only from the racing as I was flat on my back in Wangaratta Hospital after a fall during the Wangaratta Track Carnival.

A Grade saw a split in the field midway through the race, with twenty riders going clear, before a brief regrouping. A break of seven featuring regular contenders Robert Tighello and Jonny Clarke in the final ten minutes looked set to stay away before the big bunch regouped briefly. The winning move came from a counter attack in the closing laps, with a handful of riders staying clear by the length of the straight, with Jonny Clarke (SBR) taking the sprint ahead of Tighello (ACR) and Joel Pearson.

The B Grade win went to Shepparton junior Taigh Banson with a late solo effort. He held on to take the win by a handful of seconds over a field of nearly 60 riders lead home by Carnegie junior Mario Giramondo, who finished off a strong lead out from Australian Masters Champion and father Agostino.

The other races finished with bunch sprints and Tess Downing's (Le Tour Cycles) outright second place in D Grade in a strong field was the highlight. Congratulations to both Mario and Tess for being named in the Victorian Track Team for the upcoming National Titles.
