Trek Bikes Summer Series Rd 9

Heffron Park, 4 March, 2003

Easts rider Craig Dempsey continued his golden run in C grade with his 3rd consecutive overall win in round 9 to go 5 points clear of Anthony Spurgeon as A grade once again failed to catch a pumped up C grade. It's not that A grade are getting slower it's just that C grade seem to have taken on new level of speed and aggression usually only seen in the higher grades.

As the hot sultry evenings of the past 2 months gave way to a blustery, cooler evening, C grade were clearly on a mission after only 4 laps when several C grade riders were out the back because of the tempo being set by the stronger riders, many of whom must now be destined for B grade. Even the handicapper, Senor Francesco Alcino Conceicao found the going a little tough as he called it quits after only 6 laps.

Meanwhile back in B grade, it was general mayhem as our good friends from the visiting Korean track squad rode the race as if it was a slalom course through a minefield at the DMZ. Fortunately their do or die racing style didn't lead to any mishaps and the racing pattern of previous weeks unfolded when A grade put B grade out of their misery with 5 laps to go, by simply powering right past them. Randwick Botany junior, Robbie Cater grabbed a useful 8pts in the Sprint King competition by sneaking off the front the previous lap and now leads the Sprint King competition from clubmate Chris Jenkins by a handy 25 point margin.

With C grade absolutely nowhere in sight, the usual frenzied tempo of the last few laps was somehow missing as the A and B grade riders only had one place each to contest as the 5 overall places were well and truly up the road. In the gallop for the line Clarence St Cyclery rider, Brian Appleyard showed off his fast finish to get the A grade spot in front of one of the more fancied Korean riders. Robbie Cater finished off a good night at the track by winning the money for 1st B grade rider.
