Eastern Suburbs CC Summer Series #1

Heffron Park, January 7, 2003

Cater holds off A grade

Randwick Botany junior Robert Cater scored a surprise win in the first round of the Eastern Suburbs Heffron Park Summer Series, winning by a clear 20 second margin in front of A graders Anthony Spurgeon and Stewart Campbell. Cater, who started with B grade, rode solo or with a three man break for almost the entire duration of the 15 lap race, and saw his efforts rewarded with a gutsy win.

A somewhat smaller field greeted the starter for the first race of the series on Tuesday night at Heffron Park. However there were no changes to the handicap, with C grade getting its usual one and a bit laps start on A grade, and B grade getting three quarters of a lap. The conditions were extremely windy, with a strong North Easterly blowing across the riders down the main straight.

A rapid pace set by A grade saw the small group decimated in just a few laps, as they set about catching B and C grade. By halfway, the bulk of the B grade bunch had been swallowed up and spat out by the thinning A grade field, But by this stage the winning break had already been made, as Robbie Cater and teammate Chris Jenkins were battling the wind a minute ahead.

A grade was eventually reduced to just five riders, and although they managed to catch and pass C grade in the closing laps, Robbie Cater remained out in front, now on his own. The powerful junior rider didn't ease up at all, and still had a comfortable margin when he crossed the line as the victor at the end of 15 laps. Anthony Spurgeon (Caravello) easily took the sprint for second, followed by Stewart Campbell and Jose Rodriguez (Easts), with Liam Kelly (Randwick Botany) rounding out the top five.
