New riders scoop prizes

By Tony Horneman

Randwick Botany's Martin Millwood put in a big first lap in the 36km A-Grade race at Heffron Park on Saturday, but punctured shortly after. The remaining riders battled it out for another 17 laps of the tight 2km circuit. Randwick Botany riders Liam Kelly and Patrick Jones along with Eastern Suburbs rider Stuart Campbell constantly attacked, which resulted in an average speed of 40kph for the race. Campbell led out the final dash to the finish line. Robert Cater reacted quickly and jumped on Campbell's wheel closely followed by Chris Jenkins. Kelly joined the battle and powered home to finish first in a time of 54min 13sec. Campbell finished second and Jones, where a 1990 vintage MET helmet, third.

The ink was barely dry on Brendan Ingram's Randwick Botany Cycling Club affiliation form, when he stormed home to record his first win in his first race in B-Grade. Ingram's winning time was 52min 50sec at an average speed of 37kph. A-Grader Aaron Castles had a day off racing to perform marshalling and safety duties. "Joe Sorby was the star performer in B-Grade today, in what was a fairly steady race", Castles said after packing up the marshal chair and radio equipment. Second place went to Michael Cowan with strongman Clive Hammerson third.

Track rider Natasha Harrigan from the St George club lined up with C-Grade hopefuls in their 28km ride. New club member Roger Crawford drove the bunch early in the race, before an eight-rider breakaway occurred at the midway point. The breakaway included Randwick Botany riders Ben Still, Shaun Ballesty and Wayne Goold. Randwick Botany's Crispin Arnell rode away from the bunch in the final sprint recording an easy win in the humid conditions. Second was Mark Goodwin (Sutherland) with Karl Bellemy (Sydney) third.

New Randwick Botany Cycling Club members featured in the D-Grade 20km event placings with Neil Richards winning in a time of 33min 45sec at a healthy average speed of 36kph, which was higher than C-Grade's average. Greg Smart was second with new member Craig Pager third. Placings in the E-Grade 12km race were Norman Jew 30min 10sec and an average 24kph, Julia Guinan, Ross Fullerton and Kevin Blanchfield.

Junior riders competed in Time Trial and an all-in 8km handicap race. Tom Patton recorded a time of 3min 28sec for the 2km Time Trial on his new bike. "I shaved 11 seconds off my personal best time. The new bike is great", Patton said after the Handicap race. Placings and times for other junior riders are listed at the end of this report.

Coverage of local cycling results can be heard on Sydney's Eastside Radio 89.7FM "GAME ON" program, hosted by Brad Cooke, each Saturday morning from 10am.
