North Sydney rider Laurant Vignes drove the 6-rider A-Grade bunch at Randwick Botany Cycling Club races at Heffron Park on Saturday 27 July 2002. Vignes along with Anthony Spurgeon from Team Caravello and John Kenny from Eastern Suburbs broke away on lap 4 of 18. The trio stayed together to fight out the final sprint to the line. Spurgeon led out and Vignes managed to follow his wheel but Spurgeon prevailed to win by the narrowest of margins. Kenny finished third with the rest of the field further back. Spurgeon's winning time was 54min 50sec with an average speed of 40km/h.

Belinda Granger from Eastern Suburbs club lined up with fifteen other B-Grade riders for the 32km criterium race. Granger stayed with the bunch and was happy with her performance in the sprint. Final placings were Clive Hammerson, Glen Ion from Waratah Veterans and David Jackson. The winning time was 50min 36sec at an average speed of 38.3km/h. Granger commented after the race that it was good fun and a nice hard race around Heffron Parks tight corners. She is looking forward to competing regularly on Saturday afternoons.

Randwick Botany's Matthew Tabone has been watching too many Tour de France highlights because he made a spectacular solo breakaway with 4 laps to go in the 16-rider 28km C Grade event. Tabone maintained a 200m lead until the end of the race, winning in a time of 46min 9sec. Frank Conceicao from the Eastern Suburbs club won the bunch sprint for second place followed by Daniel Hynes from the Sydney club. Other bunch finishers included Murray Tulett and Colin Newell from Waratah Veterans.

Tanya Bosch from the Sydney club finished just out of the placings in the 20km 19-rider D-Grade race. Bosch is preparing for the World Masters Games to be held in Melbourne on 5 October 2002. First place went to Ben Still in a time of 34min 33sec with Mark Woodhouse second and Peter Haywood from Manly Warringah third. Strong performances were put in by Colleen McCarthy and Fleur Jolley from the Eastern Suburbs club and Beth Bowen and Ken Lord from the Sydney Club.

The E-Grade event was over 14km and was won by Norman Jew in a time of 31min with Kevin Blanchfield second.

Junior numbers were down this week due to Randwick Botany riders competing in the Canberra Two Day Tour. Two events were staged starting with the U15 Time Trial over 6km. The best time was recorded by Andrew Young 10min 40sec, Mark Woodhouse came in at 11min 16sec and Brodie Talbot from the Bankstown Sports club 11min 46sec. Talbot used the event as a preparation race for the Annual Randwick Botany Junior Carnival to be held next Saturday 3 August starting at 8.30am at Heffron Park. Andriano Maradini recorded a time of 13min 19sec in the 6km U11 Time Trial.

Maradini put in a gutsy performance in the 10km Handicap. Given a 3min start ahead of the older riders, he managed to stay with them after he was caught at the half way mark. He finished only 30m behind which is not bad considering the other kids are up to 2 years older than him.

The Chief Commissaire, Helen Vella named Adriano Maradini as the best rider of the day.
