Into the swing of Summer

Good fields again this week with the summer season well into the swing of things. The Women’s fields in particular are hotting up, with Helen Kelly and former World Champion Triathlete Emma Carney tuning up in C Grade before looking to fine tune their Bay Series preparations by mixing it with the B Grade men in coming weeks.

First time rider Ian Renouf will only have one ride in D Grade after outclassing the field to take a comfortable sprint win. A fall on the second last corner as riders looked for the best wheel put half the bunch out of contention, but Renouf emerged unscathed to lead home Michael Boyce, Darren Moore and young Peter Johnstone who had uncharacteristically not been on the podium for a few weeks.

With a blustery northerly wind making things tough for the C Grade bunch, keeping the big bunch strung out in single file much of the way. The yo-yoing at the back of the field saw quite a few riders in trouble and at the 45 minute mark the elastic snapped and almost a quarter of the field last contact.

Carney moved to the front to try to set up training partner Kelly in the closing stages, but a late solo move from Vaughn Bowman saw him hold off the sprinters by 50 meters, to take a good win ahead of David Taylor, Matt Young and Danny Weatherley.

The B Grade bunch was caught napping by an early breakaway featuring 7 strong riders. Recent winners Danny Kah, Russell Newnham, Andrew Smith and Michael Bailey were joined by Rob Curtis, Cameron Hunter and Mick Buckley opened a gap early and combined smoothly to quickly move out of sight.

With all riders rolling through, the break lapped the field after only 40 minutes, and continued the tempo after the capture. With the lapped riders off the circuit to allow an unimpeded finish the group was content to sprint for the placings, with the win going to the speedy Bailey from Kah, Hunter and Smith.

Ray Turner (Diamond Back) keeps trying to pull off the ‘hit them off the start line’ trick, but after a few laps alone today realized that he wasn’t going to get the company needed to make a go of it. After a few attacks and counter attacks, the dominant duo of Hilton Clarke (SBR) and Robert Tighello (ACR) went clear, taking David Tanner (VIS) and Matt Goold (ACR) along for the rider.

The chase from the bunch was a lot more effective than it has been in the past few races, with Turner, Doug Garley (THC) and Jamie Nicholson prominent, but the break still managed to take time out of the bunch. Goold lost contact with the leaders at the 40 minute mark, who seemed to lift the pace another notch and were soon closing in on the back of the bunch.

After the capture, Goold spent a few laps in no man’s before starting to lose ground on the bunch and withdrawing. Clarke and Tighello jumped away from the bunch again with 10 minutes remaining, and fought out the win uncontested. Tanner took a good third place 1 lap up on the bunch, while the bunch was lead home by Simon Walker (Bicycle Superstore) twice! Walker sprinted to a premature finish 10 minutes from time after misunderstanding a ‘3 to go’ call to the B grade breakaway, but put his confusion aside and did it again to lead home Matt Chessum (Fitzroy Cycles) and Luke Weir (Mainline) when it counted.

With the first of the Regional Women’s Criterium Series races next weekend, the Women’s divisions were closely contested today. Tess Downing took out the D Grade event from Melissa Nicholls and Amy Phillips, while Renee Heinreich unleashed a powerful sprint in C Grade to upset Helen Kelly’s efforts with Delys Franke (Merida) not far behind.

No racing at Glenvale Crescent next Sunday, December 15th, due to the Regional event at Delmore Drive, Scoresby (Melways Map 72 F8), hosted by the Dirt Riders Club. Carnegie Caulfield Criteriums continue at Glenvale Crescent on Sunday December 22nd, with racing also held every Tuesday night at the Springvale Necropolis circuit, with the Police Road gate (Melways Map 80 G6) opens at 6pm for race starts for all grades at 6.30.

All holders of current Cycling Australia licenses are welcome (don't forget to bring your license or receipt!) and non-members can have a go by taking out a three-race license for $39, deductible from your full membership if you decide to continue racing. For first time competitors, Tokyo Olympian Mick Hollingworth conducts racing clinics in E Grade.
