South Australian Masters Games

Port Pirie, 12-13 April, 2002

Mildura-Coomealla CC riders take wins and podium places

By Peter Winton

Mildura riders performed creditably at the South Australian Masters Games held at Port Pirie on Friday 12 April and Saturday 13 April. Small fields were a disappointing feature particularly as this was a State games event. However, friendly people, fine weather and a challenging circuit made the 480 kilometre trip worthwhile.

Rob McNally was the stand-out performer with 2 golds from 2 events. Winning the 40-44 year old road race and time trial from noted sprinter John Danvers of the Riverland Cycling Club. Rob was within 10 seconds of the fastest time trial for the event.

Barry Pollock snagged a silver medal in the 50-54 year road race after having mid-race problems, mechanically and then physically. Arthur Anderson, 5th in the same age road race, hooked a silver medal in the time trial the following day.

In the 45-49 year road race Jack Lokan caught a silver medal, Barry Gentle the bronze and Peter Winton managed a 4th place. This age group met with a significant competitor in Peter Sharman from the Brunswick Cycling Club (Melbourne). Although a Track specialist his power and obvious greater experience put him above his country rivals and he proved too strong in the finish of the road race and time trial. In fact his time trial was the fastest of the all age groups.

The Mildura cyclists dressed in their fresh outfits drew appreciative comments from the other cyclists and spectators indicating that promoting a team ethos does have it's values and rewards.
