Fifth Peace Race win for Wesemann
Telekom's Steffen Wesemann was the big favourite for this year's Peace Race and he did not disappoint, showing his class to win the race for a record fifth time. Wesemann was too strong for Ondrej Sosenka (CCC-Polsat), putting another 35 seconds into him in yesterday's stage to seal the GC. The rest of the field fared worse though, with Tomas Konecny (eD'system-ZVVZ) the next best placed at 6'29 down.
The final stage was won by Mercatone Uno's Enrico Degano, who beat René Haselbacher (Gerolsteiner) and Danilo Hondo (Telekom) in the bunch sprint. It was Mercatone Uno's second stage win after Andrea Moletta in Stage 6, but the dominant team in the Peace Race was undoubtedly Telekom, which won the first three stages and controlled the race perfectly.
The final stage between Bad Elster and Erfurt started off slowly, with the first successful attack coming after 77 km when Eric Baumann (Team Wiesenhof) jumped clear. He gained four minutes lead in the next 30 km before Telekom shut it down just after the final sprint (km 134). Telekom controlled the bunch for the final 25 km but they didn't get the result they desired in the stage, as Enrico Degano and Rene Haselbacher proved to be too fast for Danilo Hondo, who won the first two stages.
For Wesemann the overall victory was a nice surprise, after having to miss most of the classics due to injury. "After the injury period in spring, I already had given up on the Peace Race," he said. "Now I've won it."
