200 km in the lead for Polish Huzarski
Polish rider Bartosz Huzarski (Mroz) has won the seventh stage of the Peace Race, successfully pulling off a 200 kilometre solo breakaway to finish over five minutes in front of the main field. Huzarski was no threat to GC leader Steffen Wesemann, starting the day over 16 minutes down. Thus he was allowed to go and none of the other teams were interested in bringing him back. Danilo Hondo (Telekom) won the bunch sprint for second ahead of Enrico Degano (Mercatone Uno).
Today's 213 kilometre stage from Lübben to Naumburg was the longest stage of the Peace Race, balanced by the fact that there were no big climbs en route. It was also wet, and this certainly helped the breakaway. After a brisk and aggressive start, Bartosz Huzarski attacked after 13 kilometres to take the first sprint bonus at kilometre 15 with a 35 second gap to the main field. But the Mroz rider didn't sit up and wait, deciding to continue on with his breakaway and see how far he got.
Huzarski dangled three minutes in front of the peloton for 25 kilometres, until the bunch decided to sit up and let him stay out there. By kilometre 95 he was a massive 22 minutes in front, which gave him the virtual yellow jersey by 6 minutes. The disinterested peloton let him get up to 26'55 (km 135) before there was finally some chasing being done.
With 50 km to go, Huzarski began to really suffer, but with such a huge lead it was likely that he would stay away to the finish. The bunch was led by Telekom and CCC, and with 35 kilometres to go the gap was under the 17 minute mark, thus ensuring that Wesemann stayed in yellow.
The rain continued to fall and Huzarski continued to press on to the finish with an ever decreasing advantage. However at the end he still have 5'15 to the peloton, and was able to celebrate a fine and brave victory over the elements, having averaged around 39 km/h for a 200 km solo effort.
