Australian team report

By Brian Stephens, AIS U23 manager

Today was the GP Industrie del Marmo, in and around the big marble quarry at Carrara. The course includes laps that go up a tough climb, through the quarry and through a long tunnel at the top of the climb, followed by a tricky descent and a loop down to and along the sea front of Marina di Carrara.

The AIS Mapei Aqua Australian team consisted of Peter Dawson, Ashley Hutchinson, Lee Godfrey, Aaron Kemps, Bernie Sulzberger, Brendan Cato, David Betts and Gene Bates.

The pace of the race was pretty high from the start and our first casualty was Ash Hutchinson who slipped and crashed on the first descent and could not catch the group again. Next time up the climb we lost Lee, Brendan and Bernie. Peter Dawson fought hard to stay with the group and help out Gene for as long as he could. He was dropped on the 3rd time up the climb. Aaron and David rode well to stay in the front group until the last time up the climb, but ended up being shelled in a group of about 30 riders.

Cristian Tosoni, from Grassi, attacked on the last climb and stayed clear for the remaining 20km for an impressive win. In the group behind, Gene Bates showed continued improvement in his 4th race back after his broken collar bone to finish in the front group and run 17th in the sprint behind Tosoni.
