Saturn do the daily double

Saturn had their race wheels on today at the Solano Bicycle Classic, winning both the men's and women's criteriums in a fine display of teamwork and speed. Laura Van Gilder was faster to the line in a field sprint against Tina Mayolo Pic of Diet Rite and Nicole Freedman of Team Basis, while Eric Wohlberg and Mark McCormack finished one-two in the men's race ahead of a charging Russell Hamby of Ofoto-Lombardi.
Skies were blue and the lawns were green in Fairfield on Saturday when the women rolled to the line. Wind was negligible in comparison to the gusts of the last two days, and the L-shaped course was wide and inviting.
The men's race was characterized by a strong breakaway that formed at roughly the two-thirds mark of their 90 minute race. Webcor's Steve Larsen was driving a fast formation of nearly 20 riders, including GC leader Chris Horner, Prime Alliance's Jonathan Vaughters, Jelly Belly's Ben Brooks, Gord Fraser and Mike Sayers of HealthNet, 7Up-Maxxis's John Lieswyn and Kevin Monahan, and four Saturn lieutenants. It was a fast and formidable group and showed no mercy on the collapsing field.
"At the start of the day I thought there's no way a break could get away here," said Larsen. "But it's just one of those things. There just wasn't enough horsepower left in the pack to catch us."
Vaughters seemed surprised to have been caught up in such a powerful group. "I was riding up front and all of a sudden I looked up and I was off the front," he said. "I was sitting on the break, I was trying to slow it down."

Whatever the case, the break did not slow down, and the few riders from it who had mechanicals could not regain their position. Lieswyn was in the pit twice with bike problems- he finished somewhere in no-man's-land between the pack and the break- and Gord Fraser suffered most when he was placed back in at the rear of the field instead of with the break after a mechanical.
"I had good legs," he said. "But I flatted near the end of the race. The officials didn't push me in until the very back. I was in the break when I got the flat, and they pushed me in 150 guys back."
Saturn began to crack the whip with four laps left, leading out with Horner, Trent Klasna and Viktor Rapinski in a very aggressive series of turns. "Klasna did an incredible job," said Horner. He came around the first corner and said 'That's all I've got,' and I said no you've got to do one more. Then I just hit out until the last corner and dropped the others off at 52 k an hour."
In third was Ofoto-Lombardi's Russell Hamby, finishing apart from the duo of Wohlberg and McCormack but just in front of Monahan and the rest of the sprinters. "It got quite dodgy through the last two corners," said Hamby. "It was pretty hairy. I like that, though. I love banging bars in the sprint."
Marty Nothstein of Navigators put on a show for the crowd, sprinting from the field with 200 meters and taking it all the way in to the line.

Saturn's Manon Jutras led early, showing fire from the first lap. She rolled at the head of the peloton in defiance of her position on GC, as well as in support of her team.
"We wanted to be aggressive right from the gun," said Jutras. "We wanted to stay at the front and watch the counter attacks, to be aggressive and keep going."
Lynne Gaggioli of Velo Bella, lying fourth overall, worked to develop a 42-second gap on the field near the midway point of the race. She held a great and steady pace through several laps until Saturn's Ina Teutenberg pulled out of the breakaway with a mechanical.
"I thought I had a puncture," said Teutenberg. "There must have been something caught in my wheel that sounded like a puncture. But I passed the pit, so I thought I'll just get it changed right away, instead of riding half a lap on a puncture. But then I got there and it must have been a leaf or something, because it [the puncture] was gone."
As Teutenberg was denied a free lap, Saturn was left without a rider in the breakaway. Gaggioli was with 10 other riders, and as Saturn began chasing hard from behind, few seemed able to stay with her.

"There were some strong women in the break," said Gaggioli. "But there were others who weren't, and they weren't pulling. So I kind of yelled at them a little. But they yell at me in other races, so I figured I'd give some back."
Yelling worked to no avail, and soon Saturn brought the race together. Teutenberg led out for Laura Van Gilder, who bested Tina Mayolo Pic, and the race was won. The dynamics of a field sprint made determining the top 10 difficult, and it was not until almost 30 minutes after the race that Nicole Freedman was declared the 3rd place finisher.
Tomorrow is the final day of the Solano Bicycle Classic and should see some competitive moves in both the men's and women's GC. Perhaps the first few positions overall look solid, but the riders are strong and they are hungry. There are sure to be changes in the top 10 before the sun sets on Sunday.
