Samuel Dumoulin captures Muravyev's deserved win

After Thor Hushovd and Jérôme Pineau for the last two years, Samuel Dumoulin is a worthy winner of the Tour of Normandy. He's also a young pro in the making, for now specialised in winning cat. 5 races - stages in the Tour de l'Ain, the Mi-Août bretonne and the Tour de l'Avenir - but he is a man to watch in the near future at a higher level.
He captured the overall classification from Kazakh Dimitri Muravyev by finishing third in the final stage in Caen, taking four seconds bonus. The two men were then on the same time, but the French rider was declared the winner by virtue of 29 hundredths of a second that he gained in the prologue.
Muravyev couldn't believe his eyes after having celebrated his win already with his team-mates from the Quick.Step development squad. His directeur sportif Herman Frison didn't know the rules of international cycling when he was talking to the commissaires and complaining. His rider deserved the win, but he was definitely not the winner, although his team did the best job by far.
Just as the day before, they had Jochen Van Summeren in the 13 man breakaway. He was the highest ranked of the riders in the lead group, so it was up to Jean Delatour to chase, which they did for a while before three of them got dropped halfway through the stage.
"I had the feeling that we would finish 20 minutes down and the race was gone, but the bunch actually never stopped," Dumoulin was happy to realise. Indeed, the amateur Breton team Jean Floc'h was much better value than the French TT1! They did most of the work to bring the bunch back to Rabobank's Joost Posthuma, Jonathan Dayus and Lars Breiseth from Team Ringerike, just to name a few.
Their leader Christophe Thébault was bitter though. "Without small amateur riders like us taking the responsibilities in the race during the whole week, a professional would never have won the overall."
When Breiseth, the last rider away, got caught just before entering the final laps in Caen with 10km to go, Quick.Step thought they crowned it all by sending Preben van Hecke to the front with Fdjeux.com's Nicolas Fritsch. It helped them to take the stage victory - a fantastic one - but there was still 4 seconds bonus to be attributed to the third man on the line, in fact the winner of the bunch sprint, and Dumoulin was the one.
"I understand the disappointment of the Kazakh rider, he commented. He was also very strong and we all have to admire what he did during the week. I feel sorry for him," said Dumoulin.
This is Jean Delatour's first win this year. It will not be enough to deserve a wild card for the Tour de France. This team was actually very lucky to beat the amateurs at the end, because they have been far from being as good as Bonjour was one year ago helping Pineau to win.
