Stage 1 - February 19: Tavira - Tavira, 178 km
Edo takes windy first stage
Spanish rider Angel Edo (Milaneza-MSS) has won the first stage of the Portuguese stage race Volta ao Algarve, held around Tavira. The experienced sprinter was the quickest of a 65 man leading group, with Canadian climber Michael Barry (USPS) surprising for second place, and Yon Bru (L.A. Pecol) in third.
The surprising absence of Raimond Rumsas on Lampre's roster was the first incident of the Portuguese race. After being registered by the Italian team and confirmed by the organization at the official presentation, Rumsas finally didn't head to Portugal. According to Lampre's team manager Maurizio Piovani, it was decided use the Volta ao Algarve as a stepping stone to the Giro, so Francesco Casagrande came instead, accompanied by several of his teammates who will ride for him in the Giro.
The first stage was full of incidents, confirming the 'early season nervousness in the peloton' theory. A big crash at km 25 sent home Fernando Sousa (Antarte-Rota do Móveis-BPN). Michael Barry commented of the crash that "Damon (Kluck) and I crashed early on...In our crash, 15-20 guys went down and it was one of those crashes where you can see it happening but can't do anything about it. The group is pretty nervous here, with lots of young guys in the race."
15 km further, Oscar Serrano (ASC-Vila do Conde), Roberto Lozano (Kelme-Costa Blanca) and Aitor Silloniz (Euskatel-Euskadi) escaped from the peloton and rode together for 78 km, at which point the Kelme rider attacked to continue on his own. But Milaneza-MSS was already in control of the peloton, preparing for a possible first win of the season for their sprinter Angel Edo. The work of the Portuguese team was quickly bringing Lozano back to the main group.
At km 140, a new crash involving several riders saw David Zabriskie (US Postal) taken to hospital. "Dave had a pretty bad crash on a downhill with about 50 kms left," said team director Johan Bruyneel. "He injured his knee pretty bad, but it looked worse in the race that it actually was. His knee was stitched up at the hospital and we also found out he dislocated his shoulder. Obviously, he is out."
Four kilometres later, Lozano's break was finally annuled. The last 34 km brought nothing new to the race and it finished with a bunch sprint won by Angel Edo over Michael Barry and Yon Bru.
Second placed Michael Barry commented about the sprint that "It was pretty windy at the finish and I happen to be at the right place at the right time and on the right wheel at the finish. With about one kilometre to go, I saw it was just me and Victor (Hugo Peña) together. Half of the group got stuck on one side of the road and into the wind and with 500 or 300 meters to go, I began sprinting behind a group of about seven and came around the group. I almost came around (Edo) at the end. I have been feeling pretty decent on the bike and was happy with the finish."
