Da Cruz on his way to the win

FDJeux.com's Carlos Da Cruz is highly likely to win the Circuit de la Sarthe et des Pays de la Loire. He convincingly beat his rival Alexei Sivakov from BigMat in the individual 8.8 km time trial in Angers by 26 seconds. His lead now looks comfortable enough to take the overall win on Friday in Le Mans.
"I have excellent teammates such as Bradley McGee and Jean-Cyril Robin, and I know they'll protect me from any danger tomorrow," Da Cruz commented. "I'm not worried. If I don't crash, I'm going to win. I already rode without stress today because I was aware of my current condition. The team made me room with Brad, so I had no choice but do the same preparation as him for the time trial, which is...sleeping. Then I rode flat out."
Da Cruz is a former track rider, used to ride the pursuit. This dead flat time trial was no more than two individual pursuits. The weather conditions made it hard though, as it was chilly in Angers today.
The big crowd expected Gerolsteiner's Michael Rich to win, as he rode with less wind than other riders later, but Sylvain Chavanel made the big coup right at the end of the day, beating the German specialist by 3 seconds.
"I didn't specifically prepare myself for this time trial," La Boulangère's young leader explained. "But it confirms that I'm back in shape. I didn't feel too good last week at the Route Adélie. Now I know that I'll be OK for Amstel Gold Race, Flèche Wallonne and Liège-Bastogne-Liège. This is the first win of my life in a time trial. After my win in the Tour du Haut-Var, it may sound like I'm going to have a good season. But now I have some regrets about the first stage, I had the legs to win the Circuit de la Sarthe."
This is the kind of race where no mistake is allowed. One year ago, Bradley McGee didn't pay enough attention in stage 1 and lost the GC at the end by just one second to Didier Rous. This time it's Fdjeux.com who is riding perfectly so far, and should logically beat arch rival La Boulangère in the western part of France, where the battle between local directeur sportifs Marc Madiot and Jean-René Bernaudeau looks like a never ending story.
