Pinotti makes the break, Valverde keeps lead

Lampre's Marco Pinotti injected some drama into the Vuelta al Pais Vasco today, winning the 171km stage by just three seconds after a day-long breakaway. The overall race lead stayed on the shoulders of Alejandro Valverde (Kelme), who won the bunch sprint for second place behind the heroic Pinotti. With four stages completed and 31 riders equal on time in the general classification, the final time trial stage appears more and more likely to be the decisive moment of this year's tour.
Once again in this year's race, a parcours featuring five category 2 and 3 climbs did nothing to separate the leaders, and aside from Pinotti's escape, did nothing to prevent a bunch sprint. Such has been the pattern of the Vuelta. The early breaks have gone on the first or second climb, only to be gradually reeled in by the peloton. Without a mountaintop finish, each stage has provided the bunch with around 15km of ground after the final summit to bring back any last ditch attacks.
Not to be dissuaded, Pinotti moved clear of the field with more than 130km to race, including all five of the day's climbs. He built his advantage with the help of Dermot Nally (Paternina-Costa Almeria), and over the next 50km, the duo built a maximum lead of over 11 minutes. As expected, this lead began to dwindle once the climbing began, and by the time the two crossed the summit of the category 3 Alto de Usategieta, the advantage was down to 6'20".
On the first of two ascensions of the Alto de Sandias, Pinotti decided it was time to go it alone, and dropped his companion Nally. With gradients reaching 10-12% in certain sections, the Alto de Sandias posed a challenge to Pinotti, who began to lose more time against the chasing peloton, which was being driven by the iBanesto.com team. The determined Italian held a steady advantage on the descent, but reached the valley and the beginning of the final climb of the Sandias with just 2'30" in hand.
It was do or die on the final climb for Pinotti, whose lead didn't look sufficient with only 21km of racing remaining. Nonetheless, he dug deep and reached the summit with nearly a minute and a half over the chasers. The gap was tumbling quickly, however, and once the attacks began from the lead group, including a strong surge by defending Pais Vasco champion Aitor Osa (iBanesto.com), Pinotti's chances began to look even less promising.
With a long descent before the finish, Pinotti pushed ahead, but the effects of the day-long break were evident. Meanwhile, Saeco's Igor Astarloa timed an attack to perfection and jumped clear on the descent after Osa was pulled back. Astarloa, clearly much fresher than Pinotti, plunged down the mountain, pedaling through turns where Pinotti chose to coast and take a wider line. Steadily Astarloa chipped away at the leader's advantage, closing to within 20 seconds with 6km to go.
As Astarloa worked to catch Pinotti, the regrouped peloton was steadily reeling in the Spaniard, and as he passed under the 1km banner, Astarloa was caught by the field, which now was just 15 seconds behind Pinotti. The finish would be down to the wire, but Pinotti pulled off a daring win, raising his arms in victory and turning around to acknowledge the bunch which was within 100 metres of his back wheel. The Italian rejoiced at having outwitted the field, as behind Kelme's Alejandro Valverde took the sprint ahead of Angel Vicioso (ONCE) and kept his leader's jersey.
Tomorrow's final day of racing will feature a 91km road race from Santesteban to Fuenterrabia, followed by what will likely be the key to the tour, a 13km time trial in Fuenterrabia. If the general classification remains unchanged after the road stage, the race of truth will be played out by a number of possible contenders. Chief among the candidates for victory are strong time trialists such as Dario Frigo, Tyler Hamilton, and Alexandre Vinokourov. With plenty of riders in excellent form, the final podium is wide open.
