Stage 5 - May 4: Gila Monster Road Race, 100 miles

Monster rides by Jeanson and Miller cinch Gila

By Stephen W. Medcroft

Drew Miller (Trek/VW All-Stars) and Genevieve Jeanson (Rona Esker) won the Tour of the Gila stage race Sunday with final-day dominations of the Gila Monster Road Race, the fifth and final stage of the Gila. Miller had every ounce of strength he needed to neutralize his stiffest opposition and rode away from the field on the toughest climb of the day in a two-man breakaway with Ubaldo Mesa Estepa (Team Tecos). Jeanson put on another time trial clinic, leaving the women's field behind after only 8 miles of racing and soloing her way to a 6:44 margin of victory.

The women covered a total distance of 69 miles, which involved one category 2 and two category 4 climbs. The men were tested for a whopping 105 miles, ascending and descending two category 4, two category 2, and one category 1 climb. The course finished uphill as well which provided numerous opportunities for riders to fall off the back and for the lead groups to thin considerably by the end. To cap a day that was eventful enough, crashes also put riders out of the race prematurely. Despite a chilly wind that played havoc with racers though, the race saw none of the previously predicted rainfall.

Men: Early bravado and late domination

In the men's race two courageous and aggressive riders tried to tame the Gila Monster early and break away for what would have been impressive, stylish wins. The first, Ron Hudson (Sportsbook.com) took off before the first climb. "I wanted to win today and do it in a dramatic fashion," he said. "I tried to get ahead, get a little advantage. I knew if I went later, there'd be too many people chasing me. I figured if I went early, since I'm down in the GC, they'd let me go. I guess I was able to stay away for about 30 minutes by myself."

His attempt was pulled back on the first major descent. Once caught, picking a sketchy line and pushing himself probably a little too hard to try and make that splash, found himself crashing on the blinding descent. "I hung it out a little too far in one of the corners and at about 50 miles an hour I flipped, did a somersault, a total Jan Ullrich. I broke my carbon bars so I was done for the day."

Gord Fraser then jumped at about 55 miles into the 105-mile course, and stayed away all the way into the Gila Cliff Dwellings turnaround before the course headed back toward the 1,600 foot, category 1 Copperas Vista climb. The elite lead pack of about sixteen riders, with Drew Miller stationed at the front, caught Fraser. "The team got to the front and brought Gord back," Miller said of his Trek/VW All-Stars. "We had about a ton-and-a-half of beef up there driving it through the valley (between climbs). Thirty seconds before the big climb, we caught Gord. We felt he was shot at that point so we just rode right through."

Then Team Tecos played its hand. "It's our fourth time here and we feel that we have a real chance to win the race," said Ubaldo Mesa Estepa through an interpreter before the race. "Attacking on the mountains is our plan today."

Estepa surged off the front in an uphill attack on some of the steepest sections of the climb. Each time, Miller and a small core of riders, which included dangerous second place GC rider, Mike Sayers, pulled him back with consistent pacing. Estepa surged again and again. Miller and company matched every time. Until, just coming into a hillside feed zone, Miller could see that he and Estepa had created a small gap.

"Estepa was feeling good," said Miller at the finish. "He was riding a real comfortable pace for me." There were four tough miles of climbing ahead and the two leaders, although matching each other stroke for stroke, were cracking the group behind.

Communicating briefly in hand signals, the two agreed to work together for mutual gain. "Once I saw that we had a gap," said Miller, "he was offering for us to work together so he could have the stage and I could get the overall." Bearing down, they paced each other up over the climb, their gap growing to almost a full minute by the top.

Behind, the group of 16 had split into a group of six, a group of two, and another small knot of riders rapidly falling off the pace. Sayers then flatted as the roads began to turn upwards again, losing his position and finding himself caught working alone into the wind. "The chase group caught us at the base of the final big climb," Miller said. "A couple of the guys said that Sayers flatted. Ubaldo and I decided that regardless of whether we were caught or not, we were going to go on that climb. We felt that since we dropped people one time, we would be able to do it again. It was comfy after that. We rode a nice pace. Ubaldo did the majority of the work."

Miller and Estepa had found their rhythm on the category 2, 1,400 foot ascent leaving the Gila Cliff Dwellings. Their gap grew to more than two minutes. The six-man chase contained riders in the top ten in GC, but none who seemed to have the kind of surge it would take to overcome the two lead riders. The names of the second group read like the roster of a mountain bike race. Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski (RLX Polo-Sport), Andreas Hestler (Canadian Cycling Association), Todd Wells (Hyundai Mongoose), and Carl Swenson (RLX Polo-Sport) kept the company of roadies Jon Stierwalt (Team Rio Grand) and Blake Caldwell (5280/Subaru). "It was awesome to see all those mountain bikers there," Hestler said at the finish.

Sayers had dropped to more than 2:30, unable to get back to the chase group with no-one to work with.

"I never wanted to attack Ubaldo," Miller said of the thought that he might ride away for a solo win and put an exclamation point on his Gila overall victory. "I knew he was 1:19 behind and he had done the work." So as agreed in their pact, Estepa crossed the finish line first for a well-deserved stage win. Miller followed two seconds back and assured himself that, for the third time in 13 years, he was the champion of the Tour of the Gila.

In the chase, Horgan-Kobelski and Hestler surged to snatch up third and fourth on the day. "I had Jeremy's wheel," Hestler said of the move. "He was driving it. With 500 yards to go I was thinking I had him right where I wanted him but I just couldn't come around him." Hestler and Horgan-Kobelski's final mile escape gained them enough GC time to bump them from seventh and eighth respectively to fifth and sixth. Todd Wells' strong finish today moved him into third overall. HealthNet's Mike Sayers dropped to seventh.

Women: Ah, Genevieve

Stages 2 and 3 of the Tour of the Gila were dress rehearsals for today's Gila Monster. Jeanson broke away from the women's field after its first major turn. "I got a little bit of information about where everyone was but without a caravan, I didn't know much," she said of her thoughts after breaking away. "I felt good but the wind was strong so I worked on my time trial."

She finished a safe 6:44 ahead of a pack of 16 racers which included second and third place GC contenders Manon Jutras (Saturn Cycling) and Katrina Grove (T-Mobile) for her third consecutive Tour of the Gila overall win.

Jeanson, in the understatement of the week, says she feels she's in "pretty good shape" right now. "I'm feeling pretty good for [it being] the beginning of the season." Jeanson's GC final gap over second place was almost seven minutes better than her last year's Gila win over Kim Bruckner. Does she feel that much better than last year? "Last year I felt good too. The results always depend on the condition of the race and how it goes. When I come here I like to test myself. It's a challenge for me to try and break away and spend the whole day in the wind by myself." And Gila, timed to fall after winter training is complete and at the beginning of the serious season, is a great opportunity for Jeanson to try out her form.

The final tally

The final overall results were quickly calculated and just as the last stragglers were crawling up the finish line, the prize money was handed out. Podium celebration with Miller and Jeanson was a quick handshake and collection of a winner's jersey and trophy bowl, a ceramic created by one of Silver City's local; artists. The site of the celebration was the historic Pinos Altos Opera House, a replica 1800s saloon and show house complete with slat wooden opera boxes on a balcony section above the main floor and prints of photographs from the era lining the walls.

After 27,000 feet of climbing and 329 miles of racing in five days, Drew Miller has shown every 30-plus club cyclist that you can have a full-time career, a family, cycling as part of your life for fun and for the passion of it, and you're not too old to have success. (Or maybe he's shown that he can do all those things.)

Jutras and Grove, able to finish with the lead 'rest-of-the-field pack,' secured their GC second and third respectively. Genevieve Jeanson has proven that whenever she shows up to a women's road race, the rest of the field needs to find a way to fall in love with the second-place prize.
