Bortolami opens his account

Gianluca Bortolami (Sidermec-Saunier Duval) offered a convincing performance in the first stage of what is a key litmus test for this weekend's Tour of Flanders. Thirty four year old Bortolami, winner of Flanders in 2001, won today's first stage in a two up sprint against Dutchman Bart Voskamp (Bankgiroloterij) after the two broke clear with around 50km to go. On a parcours including four climbs each of the Berendries and Leberg, and a stiff westerly wind to battle, the leaders proved their strength to stay clear of the peloton.
"I really started to believe in a victory after the Berendries, 8km from the finish," Bortolami told AFP after his win. "Our advantage over the peloton was pretty small by the end. We had to give it everything."
Assisted by a strong tailwind, four riders broke clear in the day's early break, including the ever-active Glenn D'Hollander, Lotto-Domo teammate Nico Eeckhout, Hendrik Van Dijk (Palmans-Collstrop), and Bram Schmitz (Bankgiroloterij), who sparked the move and gained up to nine minutes midway through the race. With three of the four leaders pulled back, Bortolami and Voskamp took advantage of the timing to launch their own attack, catching and dropping the last survivor, Bram Schmitz. Though they never gained much more than 1'20", the duo worked well together and powered over the Berendries and Leberg climbs, while behind the chase was seldom organised in the peloton.
On the finishing circuit in Zottegem, Bortolami and Voskamp held off a last ditch effort by Christophe Mengin (FDJeux.com) and Peter Van Petegem (Lotto-Domo), who broke clear of the chase group to close within 20 seconds of the two leaders. Mengin earned the last step on the podium, edging Van Petegem, who had been active for much of the race, trying several attacks.
"This win is of course a good sign before the Tour of Flanders on Sunday," Bortolami said happily. The tough Italian veteran, a former winner of the World Cup overall, placed himself among the candidates for victory Sunday with today's performance.
