Jason Allen wins second stage in two years

Christchurch cyclist Jason Allen, riding for the Meadow Fresh team won Stage four of the Tour of Southland this afternoon, a 95 kilometre ride from Tuatapere to Winton after a gutsy solo ride for the final ten kilometres.

For the 22 year old it was his second Tour Stage win in two years. Two years ago on the same day of the Southland Tour he won the morning Stage finishing at Tuatapere. "I was just so pleased to do it for the team. We're on the up now with Phillip Schnyder (Switzerland) riding so strongly," Allen said.

Shortly after the Stage start four riders, Australian Tom Leaper, Hayden Godfrey, Andrew Reid and Ben Robson went clear and had a lead of four and a half minutes before the group disintegrated. First of all Reid dropped away in the hills approaching the coal mining township of Ohai, then one of the strong men Godfrey punctured and when Robson dropped back to help his teammate. That left the Australian Leaper in front by himself.

Gordon McCauley, the tour's most aggressive rider, eventually hunted down the solo leader before being caught himself by the bunch.

The Stage produced no major changes to the overall General Classification. The powerful Southland Times team have Scott Guyton in Yellow with a 38 secs advantage over American Chris Horner, riding for the Calder Stewart team. Lee Vertongen who worked so hard for Guyton in the morning stage is currently in seventh place at 2 mins 17 secs.
