Mervar sprints to stage victory over Bennati

Finish criticised for being 'too dangerous'

Slovenian Bostjan Mervar (Perutnina Ptuj-Krka) has won the second stage of the Tour of Austria, from Reutte to Schwaz over 182 kilometres. In the bunch sprint, Mervar finished ahead of yesterday's stage winner Daniele Bennati (Acqua & Sapone) with Austrian Gerrit Glomser (Saeco-Longoni Sport) third. However, many riders abstained from contesting the sprint since the finish was in a street considered too narrow by many. Italian Antonio Salamone of Index Alexia crashed and broke his collar bone.

The overall lead did not change, and Swiss rider Fabian Cancellara (Mapei) is still in the leader's jersey.

Stage 2 was another chance for the sprinters, as all the climbs were in the first half of the stage. That didn't stop the attacks though, and after 50 kilometres the peloton was in several groups. Four riders: Werner Faltheiner (Austrian National Team), Bernhard Eisel (Mapei), Harald Morscher (Nürnberger) and Rene Jørgensen (EDS-fakta) managed to finally escape, and built a lead of 2'10 by kilometre 78. However the field was in no mood to let them go and the Elk Haus and Austrian National teams chased hard to bring them back by kilometre 116.

25 kilometres later, Simone Masciarelli (Acqua & Sapone) and Lennie Kristensen (EDS-fakta) mounted a new attack, getting a full minute's lead only to be chased back by Mapei with 7 km to go. The parcours passed the finish line once before the actual finish so the riders were able to see the conditions. Nevertheless they were critical.

"You cannot have a chicane 200 metres before the finish line. Now when the race has grown it's no longer possible to have the finish in the narrow streets of a town centre. That's too dangerous with speeds exceeding 60 km per hour," Austrian ace Peter Luttenberger said.

Race manager Rolf Slavik accepted the criticism but pointed out that the organisers hadn't been allowed to close off the wider main roads, and that the first passage of the finish line had made it possible for the riders to judge whether they would sprint or not.
