Stage 1 - July 29: Altoona Individual Time Trial, 5.67km

Manon Jutras takes lead

Team RONA report

Canadian Manon Jutras of the RONA cycling team won the first stage of The International (formerly known as the Tour de Toona) to take the lead in overall classification. Jutras, who lives in Montreal and trains in Victoria, BC, completed the 5.67-km time trial in 10'00'' at an average speed of 34.02 km/h. Canadian Leah Goldstein (Team BOISE) of Vancouver took second place less than a second behind Jutras, while Americans Jessica Phillips (Saturn Timex) and Tina Mayolo Pic (Diet Rite) finished third and fourth respectively.

"Today's course wasn't too challenging", said Jutras, "it was a series of uphill false flats with a few short climbs, plus the wind was a factor. But it really was about staying totally focused, because there is no space for the slightest mistake on a short course like this."

Jutras, who made herself a reputation as lieutenant to her team leader Geneviève Jeanson, absent from this race, will be wearing the yellow jersey into tomorrow's stage, a 118-km road race.
