Stage 3 was over 84 km of treeless high country, all over 3,000 meters altitude. The bunch split over a nasty little climb with 25 km to go and 5 of the Australians made the front half. 2 riders slipped clear over the closing stages and held the bunch off to win the stage. Gene again ran 9th while the winner was Alexandar Nikacevic from the Yugoslavian team.
