Results

The longest of the Road Time Trial Council's national championships, the 24-hour title race, ended in victory for 1999 champion David Shepherd (Rother Valley CC) when he covered 482.070 miles in his day-long ride.

Shepherd, 41, notched up a shade under 10 miles more than runner-up Jose Pinon (Central Lancs RC), who took second place with 472.079 miles. Third place went to Mark Botteley (Fenland Clarion) with 469.277 miles.

Top team in the event, that was held on Cheshire and Shropshire roads, Pete Read Racing, took the first place in the team race. Their three riders, Brian Walker, Steve Gelder and Chris Hopkinson covered a total of 1,230.847 miles.

A determined Hopkinson, who had led the race at 100 miles, finished despite a bad fall that saw him crash to the ground when his front wheel got caught in a roadside drain cover.

Hopkinson, who broke his left leg in a fall during the winter, felt that he had broken his femur once more and fractured his elbow at the same time.

Riding with virtually one leg Hopkinson refused to retire and went on to ride 160 miles to finish with a grand total of 393.243 miles and a team medal.

In the event for tandems, Eileen and David Brabbin (Wigan Wheelers) broke the 24-hour competition record for mixed tandems when they notched up 464.924 miles adding just over one mile to the previous best done in 1986.

Best women was Lynne Taylor (Walsall RCC) with 436.541 miles.
