39th Vuelta Ciclista Aragon - 2.2Spain, April 17-21, 2002Main Page Results Previous stage Next stage Stage 4 - April 20: Teruel - Teruel, 156 kmCastresana too cute but Bramati too strong.By Martin Hardie, Cyclingnews correspondent The Italian rider, Davide Bramati (Mapei) was too strong for the Catalonian, Angel Castresana (ONCE-Eroski) managing to regain his strength and pass him in the final metres of today's stage of the Vuelta a Aragon. After the two had worked together seamlessly from the time of their initial escape, Castresana, by refusing to pull through during the final kilometres and do his share, proved just a little too cute for his own good in the end. Castresana's tactics in fact were so cute that after he and Bramati still had a gap to the peloton of a minute with three kilometres left, they could have well lost everything if the race was another 100 metres longer. The riders were greeted with what could be described as a spectacular spring day after the weather of the last few weeks, sunny skies and 20 degree temperatures. Smiling behind the mayor of Teruel the ribbon was cut to get the stage underway was one of the Aussie Matt's populating the peloton this year, in this case USPS's Matt White. But he and three others, Yon Bru (L.A.-Pecol), Andreas Klier (Team Telekom) and Jan Schaffrath (Team Telekom) pulled the pin after the first 20 kilometres. Soon after, at the 32 km mark, the move of the day was made by Mapei's Bramati and Once-Eroski's Castresana. At the Alto de Orihuela (70.5 kms) their escape had created a sizeable gap. When the peloton did come over the climb, four minutes fifty seconds later, it was Jazztel's Torrent that led the way, picking up more points on his mountain's jersey conquest. At the 80 mark their lead had increased to four minutes and soon at the first sprint of the day in Bronchales (88kms) when Castresana led the way they had a gap of 5.25. Castresana was the main threat posed by the break. He had started the day at 4.27 behind Piepoli and could with a gap at the finish of two minutes jump up into the top fifteen. Bramati on the other hand was not as well placed, at 21.48 and could only conceive of in his wildest dreams a stage victory. But to do that there would have to be another long range breakaway success, and the finish into Teruel was basically a down hill or flat drag strip for the last sixty kilometres. At the crossing of the Alto de Bronchales marking the coming of that drag strip Castresana again took the points and the gap was not getting any bigger but fluctuating at 5.18. Torrent again took his points as the peloton came over the Alto. Into the final hour and the sprint at Gea de Albarracin (130 kms) Castresana again took the points but the gap was starting to be wound back - it was now at 3.50. The riders now were crossing a large open basin like plain. Ploughed and sown fields stretched off into the distance on either side of the road with the mountains far off on the horizon. It could have been the mid west of the USA or outback Australia, the road flat-flat and dead eye straight and no shelter on either side from the sun or the wind. Castresana and Bramati continued to work together as they had done from the start of their escape, with each rider putting his nose into the wind just long enough for the other to come back again and relieve him, something much easier to do with more than two. During the last 115 kms the wind started to play havoc on the bunch behind as the front riders put it in the gutter and caused splits and echelons to form behind. Those caught in the second echelon or in the waste land between were given a scare for a kilometre or so until they managed to join up and bring back the riders who had forced them out the back and into the wind. By now the straightness of the road was such that the break, still at about two and a half minutes up the road was visible when the helicopter pulled back to allow the camera a wide view. After the ten kilometre mark the road turned right towards the finish and the wind shifted more towards the back of the riders, with this change Banesto started to take charge of the head of the peloton. The gap was still hanging at around 1.40 as the two escapees seemed to have fresh pairs of legs on the way into town. At the five kilometre mark the gap was 1.19 and the two were still collaborating. Then as they started to wind through the narrower streets of Teruel, Castresana decided to play for the finish, at 3 kms the gap was a clean minute. They climbed through the town out of the protection given by the rows of apartments and across a bridge, Bramati now was clearly doing more of the work with Castresana coming through but not with the heart of his earlier efforts. As the went under the kilometre to go banner, Bramati was gesturing to the Catalan to keep going but to now avail. Simultaneously Mouncoutie (Cofidis) decided to leave the peloton and launched himself up the road in a last ditch bridging effort. Bramati was grinding in the saddle not as fluid as before, Castresana standing lightly on his pedals looking to take advantage of the Italian. The question was would he lose it all through his smart guy tactic? As they came within sight of the banner Bramati could only look over his shoulder and as expected Castresana went around him and headed for what now seemed like a close run victory. But Bramati would not give in and fought right to the line to take the spring from a disappointed and to say the least too smart for his own good, Catalonian. Mouncoutie just managed to stay away but Zabel finished on his wheel with the rest of the peloton strung out on the German's. The gap at the end on the TV was just five seconds. It could have been more if Castresana had collaborated just a little longer and it could have been nothing if the race had gone a little further up the street. At the end Bramati stated that "Today I had the opportunity to try and attack, a chance that I didn't want to let slip me by. During the final I concentrated on giving my very all. There were 2 tricky sections during the final 5 kilometres where Castresana tried to make things difficult for me. Thankfully I resisted his forcing and went on to win. I am very happy with today's win and delighted with the work I am doing here in Spain in preparation for the Tour of Italy". Tomorrow the Vuelta finishes in Zaragoza, with a Cat. 3 at 49 kms and the rest dowhill into town. Maybe we will get a fair dinkum sprint then, but the past two days have been ones for the long rangers. One thing is almost certain, Banesto will notch up their third consecutive stage race victory here on the Spanish circuit and the way the squad is firing at the moment it could go on from there.
