Race 1 - October 4: J-Town Kick Off Classic

Saturn's Dominguez a man about J-Town

By Giana S. Roberge, Assistant General Manager, Saturn Cycling Team

With the 2003 NRC season wrapping up, riders competed in sunny West Palm Beach, Florida at one of the final NRC events. The three day omnium is set in a beautiful venue in and around West Palm Beach, with the J-Town Kick-off Criterium getting things started on Friday evening.

The criterium was held on a standard four corner, one-kilometer course. Despite the assumption that there are no hills in Florida, the race promoter managed to locate a hill for the course. The eventual winner, Saturn's Ivan Dominguez, sprinted to the victory out of a group of eleven.

Half way through the one hour event, a group of ten wedged itself away from the main field. In the group was Harm Jansen (Saturn) and Oscar Pineda (7-Up). With the gap at 20 seconds, Dominguez (Saturn) realized he needed to get to the break and was able to bridge the gap solo. Once Dominguez successfully made the bridge, the group worked smoothly together and the group of eleven was not to be seen by the main field again.

As the finish neared, Jansen went to the front and gradually began to pick up the pace for the final lap and a half of the race. With a short sprint finish, Jansen was able to deliver Dominguez for the win and still manage a second place finish. Pineda was third.

Tomorrow's Bill Bone Grand Prix is held on a course that is flat but challenging as it winds around the downtown streets and around the fountain at Centennial Square.
