Quick Step comes through for 'team' victory

Some people say bad things come in threes, although Allan Davis (Quick Step) won't be one of those after taking his third Tour Down Under stage victory in today Willunga, following another dominant sprint showing in the finale.

Heading into the race's biggest day with a four-second advantage over Rabobank's Graeme Brown, Davis' Quick Step teammates controlled the head of the peloton at the right moments. Their efforts kept the punchy Australian sprinter fresh for his shot at glory in the McLaren Vale district.

He repaid their efforts with a well-timed, powerful kick that kept José Rojas Gil (Caisse d'Epargne) and Martin Elmiger (AG2R La Mondiale) and Stuart O'Grady (Saxo Bank) behind him on the line.

"The tactics were perfect," said Davis, still puffing from the effort of fending off his fellow sprinters. As he has done all week, he praised the toil of those around him. "My team was absolutely unbelievable and the only time I hit the wind was with 100 metres to go.

"I said it yesterday, and it wasn't any secret; I said there would be attacks, and there was. I just had to stay there with my team, and did exactly what I said; stay in numbers, we'll go up in progressive numbers, and try and keep them in sight up the top. That's exactly how it panned out – mate, without the team I wouldn't be in this jersey.

"I couldn't have ridden it any better – I'd like to thank all my teammates, all the sponsors, the crowd that cheered me on and all the Aussies... thank you very much Quick Step.

With the leader's ochre jersey resting on his shoulders for another stage – the final day's closed circuit race in Adelaide – Davis could finally relax and consider himself the effective winner of the Tour Down Under. Not that he was saying as much, however. "It's not over until you cross the finish line on the last day. In cycling, anything can happen – I'm just happy to come away with another stage victory," said Davis.

"We go into tonight with a pretty good buffer over the rest of the field but we didn't come here expecting that. We've worked hard and we deserve it. It's just nice to have a little buffer, which is a little different to last year when we were a second or two behind heading into the last stage."

Despite many predictions pointing to a possible victory for Team Columbia's Michael Rogers, Davis' most realistic threat came from Saxo Bank's Stuart O'Grady, who has found some strong early-season form during this race. He trailed the race lead by only 15 seconds going into the stage, and was a serious chance of snatching the leader's jersey from Davis.

It wasn't to be, however, and O'Grady could only manage fourth on the stage, thanks to some misfortune during the hectic finale. It came after a crash put him on the deck after 73km. "The first time [over Willunga] I just stuck to my game plan, and the second time we just gave it absolutely everything and I managed to stay in the front," said O'Grady. "I'm a bit disappointed with the sprint finish; I had a good run at him but just got put in the barriers. That was that."

As far the crash, O'Grady said: "Guys were getting a bit nervous and desperate – after a week's racing there's a bit of fatigue in the bunch and a few guys touched wheels in front of us... over the handlebars I went."

The end result is that O'Grady should finish in second place overall barring incident in tomorrow's final stage, which he said exceeds expectations. "I'll be more than happy to come away from here with a second spot; it's just a matter of defending that. I think that coming away from this race with a podium should make us rapt. I had seriously only been on the bike four weeks before this race, and I'm really rapt with the level I've got to in those four weeks.

"These guys have come over from 'nice' cold Europe and been racing their arse off in 30-degree heat. As the first race for Team Saxo Bank [in 2009] we've got to be happy. This time last year I was really struggling to get into the top 10 and I wasn't really up there at all. This year, with probably the best peloton we've had by a mile, to be right up there amongst the mix is great.

"Now we head to California for our training camp that makes this race look almost easy. Then we hit the Classics, which I'm really looking forward to."

Nobody could deny Davis his crowning moment, and after several years of returns to competition, doubts and hesitations, today's win confirmed he is still one of the nation's best riders. "I can't believe it – this is the best feeling I've had in my cycling career," he said.

How it unfolded

Snapper Point turned on a sparkling morning for the start of what promised to be the Tour Down Under's most pivotal stage. UniSA-Australia's Jack Bobridge told Cyclingnews before the off that, "I'd love to get myself in a move today. I haven't been in the early break this week – I've tried plenty of days but unfortunately I've missed it. A few of the other boys have got in there for us. I'd love to make it this morning, and like you said, it's whether I can pick the right one."

He picked the right one today however, and after three attempts made it into the early break on the fourth go with seven other riders, including teammate Travis Meyer, Anders Lund (Saxo Bank) and Sergey Klimov (Katusha) and Matthieu Sprick (Bbox Bouygues Telecom).

This break acted as the rabbit in today's stage, and it was the greyhounds of Quick Step who kept the peloton honest in its chase, driving the bunch to a 48-49km/h speed in the first hour. As Meyer took maximum points from both intermediate sprints, Bobridge was on his way to being the race's most aggressive rider and it was obvious he was relishing riding in front of home fans.

His comments before the stage indicated he was skeptical of a break's ability to stay away on this stage, but the young South Australian gave it a nudge, cresting Old Willunga Hill in the lead, with Klimov on his tail, the pair having moved ahead when their fellow escapees found the climb a little too tough.

And as the rest of the field made its way over the KOM, it was obvious that the speed has splintered the bunch severely. Davis and Quick Step had managed to keep its chances alive by staying in the biggest bunch that included GC rival Stuart O'Grady. Behind them, however, Graeme Brown had fallen off the pace somewhat, as Mat Hayman explained after the finish.

"We were off the back at the end of the first time up Willunga, and I figured if I couldn't stay with the group I'd try something else," said Hayman. The second over the climb it was every rider for themselves, as attacks came thick and fast, including one featuring the Australian domestique.

"We seemed to have a minute coming through the start-finish, but you burn up a lot of bikkies into that block headwind heading up the straight," added Hayman. "It didn't take long before they got us on the climb.

Another rider to attack was Matt Lloyd, who joined David Moncoutié for the repeat run over Willunga, and it was a certain Lance Armstrong who took up the pursuit of this Franco-Anglo duo. While Lloyd's an extremely talented climber, his days off the front of the race were numbered.

During the run over the top of the ridge and into the fast descent, the race came closer together to form a bunch of 50 riders. The inevitable bunch kick loomed, and the massive crowds that had gathered along most of today's course would be treated to another display of sprinting prowess from some of Australia's best fast men.

Davis knows that the 'Lance factor' was a big motivator for the public interest, and thanked all those concerned for a great event. "Robbie McEwen said to me during the second lap, before we even got close to the finish – 'this is absolutely unbelievable'," said Davis.

"That's exactly what it is. This race is unbelievable for cycling in Australia. Thanks Mike Turtur, the South Australian and Federal Governments, this race is exactly what cycling in Australia needs. To have Lance here has made this a worldwide event, and everyone's looking at it, so well done."
