Leipheimer asserts his authority

Peterson gives Garmin-Slipstream the stage win

On what was the closest thing to a mountain top finish in the history of the race, Levi Leipheimer (Astana) put his foot down and stamped his authority on the Tour of California. A well-timed attack just over 20km from the finish has handed the advantage to Leipheimer. Despite Tom Peterson (Garmin-Slipstream) besting Leipheimer for his first professional win, the defending race champion took the overall lead from Rock Racing's Francisco Mancebo, who trailed in more than a minute behind the pair.

"I think the most important thing is that you have seen all the fans come out despite the weather," said Leipheimer. "They are suffering through the weather just like we are. As we ride we think that they deserve a show and deserves our best effort. I was touched yesterday in Santa Rosa by all the people standing there in soaking, freezing rain."

"So today I took off all my [rain] clothes despite the fact it was pouring freezing rain. When we hit the bottom of the climb there were a couple of attacks. But I felt great, looked around and saw people at their limit. I had Popovych next to me, and I felt really inspired, so I said, 'Light it up Popo, let's go!"

Leipheimer's massive attack slowly picked off the remnants of the day's early breakaway, which included Peterson and Jason McCartney (Saxo Bank). The trio came together just before the top of the climb, but only the younger American was able to hold the wheel of Leipheimer as they made their way down the fast descent into Santa Cruz.

With Leipheimer more concerned about nabbing the golden jersey over the stage win, he pulled the entire way to the line, giving Peterson free reign to sprint for line honours.

"Coming up the big climb at the end, I was chasing the guy from Quick Step [Carlos Barredo] and I was with Jason McCartney. We caught [Barredo] and as we passed him Levi came up... I saw him and I just sat on his wheel. Virtually the whole way to the finish was pretty easy because I was just on his wheel."

"I understand his position, he is down on GC," said Leipheimer. "And Zabriskie is his leader and was behind, so I completely understand him not working. That is just how cycling goes. He made it to the top with me where others didn't, so in that respect you can say he deserves the win. No hard feelings, just hard racing."

While Peterson was a stage winner, it could have been more had he not suffered bad luck on the opening prologue. His start was delayed by nearly two minutes due to what he described as a mechanical right after the start. As such, the time bonus available on the line could have put him into the yellow jersey.

However, Peterson seems optimistic about the larger picture. When asked what this win means for him, he replied, "That there will be more!"

Once again the weather played a major role in the drama of the stage, with most of the day spent in the freezing rain, and even hail atop the final KOM climb. It wasn't until the finish in Santa Cruz that any consistent sunshine bathed the riders. When asked what the past two days have felt like Leipheimer replied, "Turn the shower on as cold as it goes and stand in it for 4.5 hours and that's what it feels like out there!"

Peterson, a native of the Pacific Northwest, is used to weather like today. "It was pretty similar, except to win a race you can't bundle up like in a training ride. In Washington it is 5-10 degrees colder and it will rain the whole time. In a race you have to be changing a lot. Taking stuff off on the climbs and putting it all back on on the descents."

Francisco Mancebo (Rock Racing), did not have the best day - understandable after yesterday's impressive effort. "Even though today was a very tough race I will still be in contention to compete for yellow as well as the other jerseys," he said. "My team is very strong, they managed to get me up to the sprints in good form and condition and I was able to take advantage of that. Because of my team I have been able to get to the end. But for some reason at the end today, I wasn’t able to maintain it."

Leihpeimer had empathy for Mancebo, who could not follow the acceleration on the final climb and struggled in with a third chase group. "Mancebo did a big effort yesterday, and we figured he was going to be paying for it today, so we had that to our advantage. We're bike racers, we're not machines," he said.

Leipheimer now has a 24 second lead on Columbia-High Road's Michael Rogers, and a 28 second lead on US time trial champion Dave Zabriskie (Garmin-Slipstream). Sitting in fourth through seventh places, all within 30 to 38 seconds back are three of Leipheimer's teammates, led by Lance Armstrong.

"When he went on the last climb he was untouchable," Armstrong said. "Those guys behind him started working. Two Columbia guys, Slipstream guys and Shleck. He clearly showed that he is the best rider in the race today."

"It makes life a lot easier having him up there like that. I was glad to just be in that position. I didnt feel super, super so I was just trying to follow the wheels and send him as much positive thinking as we could. He was strong."

How it unfolded

The stage from Sausalito to Santa Cruz began in dismal conditions as a brutal winter storm buffeted the riders with heavy rain and strong winds. After passing over the Golden Gate bridge, the riders sped through the streets of San Francisco where the break of the day began to take shape.

A group of ten riders coalesced from a number of early attacks, and enjoyed a maximum five minute advantage on the soggy peloton. Jason McCartney (Team Saxo Bank), Steven Cozza, Thomas Peterson (Garmin - Slipstream), Carlos Barredo (Quick Step), Stef Clement, Grischa Niermann (Rabobank), Markus Zberg (BMC Racing Team), Cameron Evans (OUCH p/b Maxxis), Ben Jacques-Maynes (Bissell Pro Cycling) and Valeriy Kobzarenko (Team Type 1).

A number of crashes plagued the peloton as they kept the breakaway in check. One involved 15 riders, and saw Andy Jacques-Maynes, the twin brother of Ben, abandon the race and transported to hospital.

The skies cleared up as riders approached the end of the stage and the sun even made an appearance as they headed along the coast in Santa Cruz county. But as they headed inland toward the final difficulty, the skies opened up and rain and even hail punished the peloton.

As the race began the steep climb on Bonny Doon Road, Barredo attacked the break and gained a big lead over Peterson and McCartney who were in pursuit. But the Spaniard from Quick Step could not hold onto his effort, and was first dropped by Peterson and McCartney and then passed by Leipheimer as he motored his way up to the front of the race.

McCartney briefly re-joined the two leaders after the mountain sprint, but a slight rise which broke up the long descent was his undoing, and he drifted back tot the chasing group.

The group behind had split up the climb, with the strong Astana team well represented in a first chase group which came across the line just 20 seconds behind Peterson and Leipheimer. Michael Rogers (Columbia-High Road) led the group across the line ahead of Chris Horner (Astana) and Oscar Sevilla (Rock Racing).

"At the end I knew if I could make it over the last climb I could give Floyd a hand at the finish and help Rock Racing chase the front group," said breakaway rider Cameron Evans (OUCH-Maxxis). "I think we all worked well together. We didn't think it would stay away like that."

Bissell's Ben Jacques-Maynes was more than just a rider on the stage today, as a local boy he helped the race organisation design the course. "I know every inch of every road on this stage," he said. "I worked with the local organising committee here in Santa Cruz to put this on. To see what a success this stage has been - all the people, massive crowds - it's just spectacular to have that kind of response from the community."

As for what he thought of Leipheimer tearing up his selection for the final KOM, he said, "Well normally I don't see Levi on a climb, he usually passes by... I try to stay with him and I have tunnel vision. He is like a motorcycle... a little one!"
