The men's peloton valued the less chaotic conditions of the 'new' stage 1 held in Cannon Falls, compared to the previous nights rained out and cancelled criterium. Current US national criterium champion, Kirk O'Bee proved he was still the fastest man in the race when he won the drag race to the line against Alex Candelario (Kelly Benefit Strategies-Medifast) and team-mate John Murphy.

"The team did a great job when they took control at the right time – I just sat on," said O'Bee, who initiated the field sprint out of the final bend with four hundred metres to go after his team led out for more than two laps.

"It swarmed a bit in the last kilometre but we were all up there. I was trying to help John Murphy out but we lost each other. I jumped and barely held them off because it was so early. But we were first and third so I can't complain."

O'Bee's stage victory also landed him both the leader's jersey and sprint jersey heading into tomorrow's stage 2 time trial on St Paul's river front. "I think it's possible to win this race on stage victories and time bonuses," said O'Bee regarding Ivan Stevic's winning strategy in the previous year's event.

"Though, this year it might lend a little more to the new uphill finish in the time trial tomorrow. The time bonuses are important in this race for sure. We have a few guys who love time trialing, it's not really my area but I'll go out there and give it one hundred percent."

Warm temperatures and sunny skies lent itself well to a calmer start in the pro men's 106.5-kilometre road race as compared to the previous night's stormy confusion that led to a cancelled stage 1 criterium.

Keck Baker (Harley Davidson-Bentley) made the first move in a solo effort that lasted several miles before being reabsorbed. Johnny Sundt (Kelly Benefit Strategies- Medifast) was the next rider to gain time on the field but he, too, was pulled back by a peloton only interested in a field sprint.

Second place on the day, Alex Candelario attributed the slower than usual race speeds to a negative style of racing where breakaway attempts were halted by teams and riders who were waiting to race offensively in the five finishing circuits.

"It was a pretty negative race all together," said Candelario who was hoping for a more action packed stage. "It seemed like no one really wanted to give'er and like everyone wanted to chase. We just chilled for the first half of the race and then rode the front about ten kilometres out from the dirt road because we could tell everyone wanted a field sprint."

With exception of the finishing sprint, the most action took place over the three KOM sprints where Nick Reistad (Jelly Belly) accumulated enough points to take the lead of his title sponsored Jelly Belly clad KOM jersey.

"My team hinted that they would like me to score the KOM jersey here because we sponsor this jersey," said Reistad, who was able to gain maximum points because no breakaways were allowed to go up the road.

"I went out there with the goal of getting as many points as I could. I really had some good team support. Michael Lang did a good lead out and it was a great team effort."

Jeremy Vennell (Bissell) gave Kelly Benefit Strategy-Medifast a reason to start their lead-out early when he separated himself from the field for more then ten miles, heading into the final circuits.

Upon the notorious dirt road descent into the city of Cannon Falls, the teams who were already organised for the field sprint swallowed Vennell.

Seeing five laps to go, Eric Marcotte (Bianchi) surprised the crowds when he crossed the line first to pick up the first set of sprint points. However, rounding lap two, an accident took the sprint jersey leader out of competition.

Health Net's dominant lead-out train came through with three laps to go, leading the peloton with O'Bee safely behind. "It's what I like to call redemption," joked Health Net's director Mike Tamayo regarding the cancellation of last night's criterium during O'Bee's mid-race breakaway.

For three full laps teams Toyota-United, Kelley Benefit Strategies and Colavita/Sutter Home rallied their team trains along side Health Net but could not overtake the turquoise and black team.

"Health Net was riding really strong and everyone was just trying to get up there behind them," said Candelario, who acknowledged the importance of being on the podium in front of his Minneapolis based title sponsors.

"I couldn't come around them. It's pretty important to do well here; being from here it's a big race for our team. We are stoked to do well."

Mixed emotions regarding the previous night's pseudo stage 1 criterium may have played a critical role in the aggressive nature of the women's 106.5-kilometre road race that reached an average speed of 40 km/h.

An array of notable speedsters vied in on the action during the five finishing circuits but current US national criterium champion Tina Pic (Colavita/Sutter Home) sprinted away with the stage victory and the leader's jersey ahead of Joanne Kiesanowski (Tibco) and Laura Van Gilder (Cheerwine).

"It was really, really important to be in good position and I always tried to stay in the top five on the circuits," said Pic, who rounded the final corner on the Cheerwine train. "There was a slinky effect and if you weren't staying on top of it you [wouldn't] be able to move up."

Second placed Joanne Kiesanowski noted that her team's main goal was to bring their two-time Cannon Falls stage winner Brooke Miller to the line. However, Miller crashed on the finishing circuits.

"It was up to me to sprint once we knew Brooke had crashed," said Kiesanowski, who spent two seasons as part of Pic's lead-out crew on the former 2003 Diet Rite team. "I raced with Tina for two years and I know her sprint."

A flurry of attacks shattered the field over the first ascent just eight kilometres into the road race and Laura Van Gilder (Cheerwine) and Katharine Carroll (Aaron's) were the first pair to roll off the front together.

Teams Cervelo-Lifeforce, ProMan, Value Act-Capital and Verducci followed suit and few riders continued to gain slim separations on the field but teams who were not represented reeled the two threatening riders back in.

"I didn't think it would be a field sprint, perhaps because everyone was so gung ho today," said Van Gilder before her third place podium presentation. "It felt like we were a meteor hurdling toward earth."

"The energy in the peloton was intense, not necessarily positive because I think there was a lot of emotion because of the results of last night," continued Van Gilder.

Felicia Gomez (Aaron's) took full points in the three QOM sprints offered in the stage. "I like polka dots," joked Gomez regarding her recent win in the climbers competition at the Grand Tour du Montreal.

"I'd really like to go for the QOM jersey here too," continued Gomez. "For a climber I have a decent sprint against the other climbers and it serves to my advantage. The time trial is suited for me. Most of the time when the road goes uphill I get excited."

Kristin Armstrong (Cervelo-Lifeforce) let the other teams do most of the work in today's stage to allow her legs to recover after lapping the field the previous night taking the criterium win.

"There are only two of us here and so the other teams with sprinters really did the work today for us," said Armstrong who stayed well protected from the win until the finishing circuits.

"There were a lot of teams that wanted a sprint finish. We sat back and decided to take a shot at it on the finishing circuits. You never know with these circuits as to whether you stay away."

Both Armstrong and her team-mate Emma Rickards used the hill each time passing the finish line to try to make an escape, however with two laps to go the attacking subsided.

"I would have to say that we were the most dominant team trying to keep the field strung out and other riders were capitalising off of that," said Van Gilder regarding her team's impressive organisation on the final lap. "With one to go my team got to the front and it was great be on the receiving end of that."

While Armstrong was forced to let the sprinters have a stage victory today, she is prepared to bring her former world time trial legs to St Paul's river front, ten-kilometre time trial that ends with a new uphill finish.

"I'm excited about the time trial," said Armstrong. "I love time trials whether they are short, hilly, flat, long. I don't have a favourite and I think if you're a good time trialist you have to like them all. The more challenging the better, so I'm happy that there is the new addition at the end."
