Health Net-Maxxis timed its lead out to perfection, bringing United States of America Criterium Champion Kirk O'Bee to the line in a slim victory over Ivan Stevic (Toyota-United) and Ricardo Escuela (Successful Living).

"The guys were unbelievable, they laid it on the line for me and it was a huge team effort," said double stage winner and points jersey holder O'Bee. "I think we showed that bike racing is not an individual sport.

"Our plan was to lead out John Murphy because if he won today he would take enough seconds to get the overall," continued O'Bee. "I really didn't think I won until I crossed the line. I looked back and I knew Stevic was coming up on me and it was close. Stevic has a good jump in him, but I gave it just enough to win and he gave me a really good sprint."

B-World Champion and 2007 Nature Valley Grand Prix winner Stevic has found his form after a tumultuous season of reoccurring injury to his knee and pelvis. "It's nice to have some legs back and I have to say that I felt really good today," said Stevic.

"I had a perfect position but for some reason I couldn't get into my 11 for most of the sprint," continued Stevic regarding the final lap. "I'm very happy with having good legs and I have great motivation for tomorrow. The ten seconds I earned to day in time means a lot to me because it means I am back in the game for the next two days. That was our plan, to get on the podium and earn some seconds."

Bissell took the responsibility in controlling the downtown Minneapolis criterium and paved the way for its general classification leader Ben Jacques-Maynes safe arrival to the finish. There were no changes with the overall classification with Jacques-Maynes leading the event with a seven second advantage over John Murphy (Health Net-Maxxis) and Edward King (Bissell).

More than 30,000 fans packed themselves along the downtown streets of Minneapolis to catch a glimpse of the some 130 professional men starters. The men's peloton lined up to compete in the 40 lapped criterium Stage 4, the day's second stage following a morning time trial.

"We would have been happy with a break to go but with our pre-designated speed it was going was pretty fast, so for a break to go would have been really difficult," said Bissell director Glen Mitchell.

Difficult but not impossible. Luis Amaran (Colavita/Sutter Home) was up for the challenge and earned himself the stage's most aggressive rider jersey when he initiated a more than 15 lap break away, followed by Tom Soladay (Time Pro Cycling) shortly after. The pair dangled at a 10 seconds advantage, held in place by Bissell in a effort to avoid further attacks.

Upon the return of both Amaran and Soladay several more counter attacks from Rock Racing and Colavita-Sutter Home attempted to dismantle Bissell's train. The two teams were hoping for a shot at a stage victory before the sprinter teams came forward.

"My guys got to the front really fast and controlled the front for the whole race," said Jacques-Maynes, proud of his team's ability to dominate the criterium. "We expected the sprinter teams to take over and they did so it worked out like clock work."

With their jobs complete, Jacques-Maynes' Bissell team-mates peeled off with 10 laps to go to allow the teams with dominant sprinters to play their game for the stage victory. Health Net-Maxxis was the first to stretch its legs, showing no intimidation as the race's end neared.

"If anything all we wanted to do was keep Ben out of trouble," said Mitchell. "We did that for 30 laps and still had two riders left over who were dedicated to stay with Ben. I think it is going to be a close race. O'Bee will continue to get more time bonuses and we are still going to work to keep to the jersey."

The stage victory and time bonuses were worth the effort for Health Net-Maxxis. The battle behind the turquoise and black train began to form between Kelly Benefit Strategies-Medifast, Toyota-United and Successful living with several laps to go but none were capable of overtaking O'Bee.

"We decided at the start of the race we were going to take over from 10 kilometres to go because the course is too tight for other teams to come around," said O'Bee. "My team did an awesome job keeping the speeds high - I couldn't have asked for anything more. It would have been a big disappointment not to come away with a win today."

Miller victorious in down town Minneapolis

The women's one hundred-plus rider field barreled down the finishing straightaway where Brooke Miller (Tibco) took a convincing victory ahead of Tina Pic (Colavita/Sutter Home) and Kate Bates (High Road). The victory continues Miller's tradition, having claimed a stage win at each Nature Valley Grand Prix held to date.

"I had a fantastic lead out on the last lap with the perfect amount of gas," said Miller. "Lauren Franges to me to the last corner and I just Kate Bates early jump for the rest of the lead out."

"It was a fantastic effort from my whole team today," she added. "The lead out that I had gave me the luxury to race my own race and not worry about what the other sprinters were doing."

How it unfolded

Kristin Armstrong (Cervelo-Lifeforce) led or stayed near

The women started the 25-lap criterium with the motivation of gaining some time back on race leader Kristin Armstrong (Cervelo-Lifeforce). However, Armstrong, who is no stranger to the dangers of criterium racing found, her place in the peloton - helping the sprinter's teams on the front to keep the speeds high enough to eliminate the threat of her rivals.

"Kristin was awesome today and very aggressive, probably trying to stay out of trouble," said second placed Pic. "Actually she was smart to do that tonight because if you got too far back it was hard to move up in those few spots where you can."

The strength of each team battling against one another to form a break away seemed to neutraliae their efforts, making it nearly impossible for break away to succeed. Katharine Carroll (Aaron's) made several attempts to gain time on the field and move closer to Armstrong's overall lead but her nearest competitors on the Cheerwine squad were close by and quick to react.

Laura Van Gilder (Cheerwine) put fourth a tremendous solo effort that was countered by Tibco rider Lauren Franges as the field regrouped. Team's Cheerwine, Aaron's, Value Act Capital and High Road formed solid representation at the front of the field sending one rider off after another.

The second of two intermediate sprint points came with eight laps remaining, and competition leader Joanne Kiesanowski (Tibco) picked up full points. The New Zealander lost out on points at the first intermediate sprint when junior rider Coryn Rivera scooped up the points at the line.

Aaron's took the initiative to start a lead out for general classification contender Katharine Carroll, but were taken over with two laps to go by Cheerwine. Tibco waited until one lap to go when Lauren Franges took Miller around the Cheerwine train and into the last corner, where she picked up Bates' wheel.

Pic suffered slightly with the loss of three team-mates due to time cuts after the women's early morning time trial. "I lost three really good crit riders this morning because they saved their legs in the time trial, which ended up being a big mistake for a lot of teams," said Pic, regarding the event's strict 20 percent time cut rule.

Bates initiated the sprint upon exiting the final corner. While it was a lengthy sprint for the Australia a tail wind proved handy to hold her speeds high enough to capture third place. "To be honest I'm here for the Olympics for the track and road and to get a bit of training," said Bates. "So I was having a it of a crack out here but everyone is just so strong. I haven't sprinted for myself in a while and I'm not real god with the hustle bustle of it all," she added. "So I wanted to go early but I didn't have much of a jump."

"Everyone wanted to get away and they only way to beat Kristin is to do that," said Bates. "On a criterium it is a good opportunity because of all the corners. But Kristin is a motorbike; as soon as she felt threatened she got on the front herself and strung it out. I think it was a noble effort by everybody but I think that Kristin is just too good at the moment."
