Big things were expected from the Tinkoff Credit Systems squad heading into this year's Tour de Langkawi, and finally on today's fifth stage the team started to deliver with Italian sprinter Alberto Loddo taking a bunch-sprint victory. Loddo not only entered the tour as the in-form sprinter, the Italian also had history on his side after winning a record equaling five stages at last year's event.

"Today we went really well, we had [Serguei] Klimov in the break and that allowed us to rest a bit," said Loddo. "With one kilometre to go we were all together, at 400 metres I was alone, but at 300 metres to go I was able to jump from left to right and win quiet easily.

The Tinkoff Credit Systems squad entered the event as the strongest team in the race, with Loddo supported by Russians Pavel Brutt, a 2007 stage winner, and strongman Nikolay Trusov. The squad also has Loddo's 2007 Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni-Selle Italia team-mate Walter Pedraza on the squad, but the outfit has struggled to control the peloton at the end of each stage this year.

Loddo explained that a change in approach to today's stage was what helped with the team's victory. "The stage finish suited me really well today," he said. "There wasn't one metre of flat road today and we went always flat out, it was a very nervous race. There was never one minute to recover.

"It's good for my team and my team-mates who have kept confidence in me, I have paid them back today," he added.

Despite entering the tour as the in-form sprinter, Loddo said at the pre-race press conference there was no pressure to win at this year's event. The Italian had already claimed his first victory of the season at last month's Tour of Qatar, where Loddo beat the world's top sprinter Tom Boonen (Quick Step) to claim a stage win.

His pre-race comments aside, the lack of success in this year's race was clearly starting to get to Loddo. At last year's event, while riding for the Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni-Selle Italia squad, Loddo equaled Australian Graeme Brown's (Rabobank) record of most stage wins at the event, with a tally of five.

"I was desperate for winning," said Loddo. "The team has worked really well for me in the previous days. They have pulled a lot but with no result, I was especially disappointed yesterday because my team-mates made a lot of sacrifices and that was for nothing."

The close contest in most of the race's classifications, combined with the short stage distance, saw no meaningful break on the 139.9 kilometre stage. Action was hot in both the general and sprint classifications, however, with Bouygues Telecom's Aurélien Clerc claiming the green sprinter's jersey after a close battle with former leader Anuar Manan (Letua Cycling Team).

Clerc dismissed suggestions that his efforts to claim the green jersey would affect his ability to help protect the one second general classification lead of team-mate Matthieu Sprick.

"Today was okay because the two sprints were at the beginning," he said. "For the team it's always better to have the second jersey in our team than in the other team. It was good for our team and it was good for me."

The Swiss rider added that while it would be nice to leave Malaysia with the green jersey, the yellow leader's jersey is the French ProTour outfit's main priority. "I think now I have the green jersey but it's not the main goal for our team," he said. "The first is to protect Mathieu, to try to win the overall, the second is to try to win stages.

"If Sunday evening I have the green jersey, it's okay," he added. "But I think if I protect Mathieu and sometimes I make the intermediate sprint and if I try to win stage, perhaps I win jersey at the end and it's okay."

Sprick's general classification lead came under attack by second placed Mitchell Docker (Drapac Porsche), with the Australian trying to claim bonus points at the intermediate sprints. Fortunately for the Frenchman a strong presence by Crédit Agricole in the sprints prevented the 21 year-old from claiming any time bonuses, leaving Docker trailing by a single second in the overall standings.

How it unfolded

A stone's throw from the wealthy Republic of Singapore, alongside the Straits of Johor, 143 lads in lycra signed on for today's fifth stage - the shortest of the race so far at 139 kilometres. Missing in action after their failure to finish yesterday was CSF Group Navigare pairing Ruben Bongiorno and Julio Cuapio Perez. However, the Argentine and Mexican still rode at least half of Stage 5 for training, leaving the start around 20 minutes before the race itself and cranking out a serious tempo before the peloton swept them up mid-distance.

For the guys wearing race numbers it was business as usual when the flag dropped at 1:23 PM local time. Attacks, attacks and more attacks came one after another, but on the wide open freeways leaving Johor Bahru there was nowhere to hide and the peloton steamed toward the first Milo (like the chocolate drink) sprint after 18.6 kilometres.

Solid Swiss sprinter Aurélien Clerc hit the line first, making the Bouygues Telecom man maillot vert virtuel when classification leader Anwar Manan (Letua Cycling) failed to score. Aussie Mitch Docker was on the hunt for time bonuses too, hoping to overhaul race leader Matthieu Sprick, but the Drapac man was denied by Crédit Agricole's Sebastian Hinault and Jean-Marc Marino, having to settle for fourth.

Still more riders tried, but the never ending straights and leg-sapping drags meant this wasn't breakaway territory. Manan hit back at the second sprint after 39.4 kilometres, but right behind was Clerc who maintained a one point advantage overall. After one hour of racing 45.5 kilometres had been covered - not as fast as yesterday, but we never said it would be.

Seventy-five kilometres down and finally a group of 30 broke clear. But with two party-poopers present by the names of Hidenori Nodera (Skil-Shimano) and Diego Nosotti (NGC Medical) - the only riders posing a threat overall - this big group didn't stand much chance of staying clear.

That wouldn't stop them trying, though, and after Nosotti grabbed the third and final intermediate sprint at Bandar Penawar after 82.8 kilometres, the break had its maximum advantage of 53 seconds. As the peloton began to close in behind, Crédit Agricole's Nicolas Roche and Matteo Priamo (CSF Group Navigare) decided it was death or glory and flew the coup. Shortly afterwards the pair were joined by Jose Serpa (Serramenti PVC), Serguei Klimnov (Tinkoff), Stefan Trafelet (NGC Medical) and Simon Clarke (SouthAustralia.com-AIS).

Passing the 25 kilometre marker and the six leaders were nursing a precarious 26-second advantage until Roche broke away solo three kilometres later. The young Irishman was immediately hauled back, but jumped again with 15 to go, getting Colombian Serpa for company.

Roche finally left the South American behind at seven kilometres remaining, and as the time gaps held steady at 25 seconds it seemed there was some hope for the Irish time trial champion. It wasn't to be however, as the peloton gobbled up the Crédit Agricole man inside five kilometres, setting the stage for the tour's second bunch gallop.

And this time Alberto Loddo made no mistake. The pint-sized Tinkoff terrier hit the front early, but even allowing for the uphill finish, the Italian had so much gas there was ample time and space to celebrate in the final 10 metres. Rolling across the line some three minutes later was the exhausted figure of Roche, the 23 year-old getting a well-deserved cheer for his valiant effort today.
