Hunt thrives in chaotic finale
Sprick still in yellow - just

Just when it seemed like Stage 2 of Le Tour de Langkawi was heading for a run-of-the-mill bunch sprint, veteran Jeremy Hunt proved that while Malaysia's biggest race may lack a few hills it's not short on surprises as the 33 year-old claimed victory in a totally lawless finale which no team could control. Displaying the kind of tactical nouse that comes with 12 seasons as a professional, the Crédit Agricole rider joined a 10-man move with 10 kilometres remaining, finally overhauling the day's breakaway and taking the sprint with ease.
"This is not an unexpected way to win," said Hunt, whose last victory came almost a year ago to the day, at the GP d'Ouverture la Marseillaise in France. "I've done that before."
Originally from Great Britain, Hunt spends long periods training in Australia during the winter, a choice which clearly paid dividends in the tough tropical heat today. "This race is so early in the season and I've come from Australia so I have an advantage on the riders coming from Europe," he said.
"I will try and win again, it would be nice to win twice in two days. The race today was really hard, we did the first 55 kilometres flat out and it was a hard finish. I managed to get to the front - just. I've won a stage and I'm happy with that."

Several teams tried in vain to control the final kilometres, as Japanese breakaways Yoshimasa Hirose (Skil-Shimano) and national champion Yukiya Arashiro (Meitan Hompo - GDR) inched ever closer to the finish in the coastal town of Sitiawan. Tinkoff Credit Systems orchestrated a half-hearted chase for their sprinter Alberto Loddo, while race leader Matthieu Sprick's Bouygues Telecom squad were either unable or unwilling to help out.
"Today there were many attacks at the beginning of the race," began Sprick, his race lead now cut to three seconds. "We were finally able to set a tempo when two guys went away - we were very happy when they went away. We controlled the race to the end, but we didn't want to ride for a final sprint, that's why there were many attacks towards the end. I was not in the first group, but I keep the yellow jersey so I'm happy."
Third on the stage and the day's big mover was Spaniard Gustavo Cesar - one of only two riders present in both winning breakaways so far - the Karpin Galicia rider moving to second overall and taking the green sprinter's jersey from the shoulders of Aussie Mitchell Docker (Drapac Porsche).

Japanese champion Arashiro was philosophical after his long day in the sun, surviving until one kilometre to go until he and Hirose were dragged back under the flame rouge. "I was feeling a bit of pain on my knee, but that wouldn't stop me from racing the way I usually race," he said defiantly. "I really thought it was possible to win today. With 10 kilometres to go I was still feeling very strong but with three kilometres to go I wouldn't say the same.
"I could have won if I was able to push more on the pedals in the last three kilometres. That's how cycling is."
Two days into the race's 13th edition we're still waiting on the first mass sprint, and so, no doubt, is Alberto Loddo. But with 209.4 kilometres on the menu tomorrow and no sign of cooler weather on the horizon, the third stage should be anything but predictable.
How it unfolded
A short transfer from Pinang Island brought the remaining 145 riders to Butterworth where traditional Malaysian break dancers greeted them for the start of Stage 2. Aside from yesterday's three retirees - Robin Schuma (Team Ista), Weng Kin Thum (MNCF Cycling Team) and Kai Tsun Lam (Hong Kong National Team) - there were no more non-starters and the peloton left town at 12.40 PM destination Sitiawan.

Indonesian climber Tonton Susanto (Letua Cycling Team) was first to come a cropper in the eight kilometre neutralised section, but quickly rejoined the peloton before the action, and the stage, started. After failing to place a single rider in yesterday's 19-man move, the Malaysians were on the offensive early with Amir Mustafa Rusil (MNCF Cycling Team) and M. Fauzan Ahmed Lutti (Malaysia National Team) taking off with Tanha Abbass Saedi (Islamic Azad University) and Abdullah Rizza Pahlavi (Polygon Sweet Nice).
These four were quickly hauled back as Simon Clarke (SouthAustralia.com-AIS) sprung clear with a solo move, but didn't gain more than 25 metres as the South African National Team marshalled the bunch, and it was altogether at 10 kilometres.
Ones and twos continued to dangle off the front but with time bonuses on offer at the intermediate sprints, it was gruppo compatto approaching the first sprint at Sg Bakap after 24.1 kilometres. Bouygues Telecom seemed to be setting up race leader Matthieu Sprick, but team-mate Aurélien Clerc took the points and bonus seconds away from green jersey Mitchell Docker (Drapac Porsche), Bernhard Sulzberger (Letua Cycling Team) and Takashi Miyazawa (Meitan Hompo).

The peloton continued to push a high pace and was working well together, while the same couldn't be said for the broken down Cyclingnews media car it passed at kilometre 40. Australia's Stuart Shaw (Drapac-Porsche) had to return to the medical car after hitting his head in a fall, while several riders neared breaking point as a result of the constant high pace.
After finishing third in the day's first sprint, Tasmanian Sulzberger charged across the second sprint line at 47.7 kilometres in first place, ahead of Asian Rider Classification leader Shinichi Fukushima (Meitan Hompo-GDR) and team-mate Anuar Manan, while Diego Nosotti (NGC Medical-OTC) claimed the final point in fourth place.
Finally, after 73 kilometres of charging, the tether snapped and two riders broke free from the peloton. Yukiya Arashiro (Meitan Hompo-GDR) led the two man assault, despite receiving three stitches after a bunch finish fall on yesterday's stage, with Japanese compatriot Yoshimasa Hirose (Skil-Shimano) in tow.

Arashiro and Hirose quickly gained 28 seconds on the peloton, which soon allowed the gap to slip beyond two minutes as it relaxed after averaging 47 km/h for the first two hours. French ProTour team Bouygues Telecom controlled the peloton, while SouthAustralia.com-AIS rider Simon Clarke played catch up after puncturing.
As the gap stretched out to 4'30, the Japanese duo fought one another for the third sprint's time bonuses and points at kilometre 124.5, where Arashiro came out on top of Hirose. As the duo continued on its way, Australia's Peter McDonald (Drapac-Porsche) collected the final time bonus with third spot, while Walter Pedraza's (Tinkoff Credit Systems) fourth spot claimed the Colombian the final point.
The stage looked destined for a bunch sprint as the Japanese breakaway was slowly reeled in to 1'50 with 25 kilometres remaining, but eyebrows were raised as the margin again slipped out to 2'15 just 10 kilometres later. Hoping the luck of the Irish would see him take a stage win, Nicolas Roche (Crédit Agricole) headed off the front of the peloton in pursuit of the leaders, with Stefan Trafelet (NGC Medical - OTC Industria Porte) following suit.
Five time stage winner Alberto Loddo had been named as a favourite in the event of a bunch finish, his Tinkoff Credit Systems outfit simply failed to scramble together its train and maintain order at the front of the peloton. Meanwhile Bouygues Telecom showed little concern for its general classification lead, with the French squad not involved in chasing down the new lead group.

The second duo would remain in no-man's land before being caught as the peloton pushed forward for an expected bunch finish. As the stage entered the final kilometre a group of 10 left the peloton, not only surpassing Roche's ambitious break but also Arashiro and Hirose's 75 kilometre lead.
The 135-strong main bunch failed to re-gain the lead group down the kilometre-long finishing straight, allowing Great Britain's Jeremy Hunt (Crédit Agricole) to take his first victory of 2008 by half a bike length over Matteo Priamo (CSF Group-Navigare), and some six seconds ahead of the peloton. Perhaps the day's biggest winner was the third place getter, Gustavo Cesar (Karpin Galicia) who picked up a 10 seconds on all but one of his Stage 1 breakaway companions, placing him in second place on general classification and into the points classification jersey.
Cesar was joined in the lead group by Stage 1 break away companion Jackson Rodriguez (Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni-Androni Giocattoli), who finished fourth on the stage.
With Crédit Agricole team-mate Hunt safely on his way to victory, Sébastien Hinault dropped off the pace of the lead group and finished in 10th place, four seconds behind the front nine. A further two seconds behind the Frenchman, Italy's Loddo took the bunch sprint for 11th place from Switzerland's Aurélien Clerc (Bouygues Telecom).
