After signaling his intentions with a solo breakaway earlier in the day's stage, sprinter Danilo Hondo (Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni-Androni Giocattoli) claimed his first victory in two seasons. The Malaysian stage race is the German's first event since returning from a doping suspension after testing positive for carphedon at the 2005 Vuelta a Murcia.

"It was a feeling I've missed for a long time," said Hondo. "Today I started the stage in a good condition, the first days we saw very interesting, incredible races. Today I felt in the morning it's a good possibility for me to go in the breakaways but the race was very fast."

"In the finish it was Tinkoff closing down the breakaway because [Alberto] Loddo had shown the last few days that he's pretty explosive but after this hard race the legs are always different. My team had a good position in the final, and I felt very good to prepare the sprint by myself in the front and I felt it was possible to win."

Hondo claimed the 169 kilometre stage in a bunch-sprint, with the 34 year-old easily edging out Mauro Abel Richeze (CSF Group Navigare) and Marco Corsini (NGC Medical - OTC Industria Porte), while in-form sprinter Alberto Loddo (Tinkoff Credit Systems) finished a disappointing ninth.

The German rider noted that his earlier breakaway attempts demonstrate that he's a well rounded rider, not just a pure sprinter.

"I know that it's different between me and sprinters like Loddo," he said. "I can make a hard race with some climbs, I have the possibility to win out of this hard race. So I like today, this character of stage.

"My head was very clear in the final, I had the feeling for the position I was never nervous," he added. "My team stayed behind me and we got the perfect situation. So you see every day is different and everything is possible."

The victory, at his first race since returning from suspension after he was forced to miss last month's San Luis, was Hondo's 65th as a professional. The German's resume includes an impressive tally of wins, including multiple victories at the Giro d'Italia, Volta a Cataluyna, Sachsen-Tour, Niedersachsen Tour and a second placing at the 2006 Milano-San Remo.

Meanwhile the yellow jersey came under threat today, with second placed Mitchell Docker (Drapac-Porsche) claiming two of the three second deficit to leader Matthieu Sprick (Bouygues Telecom). The French tour leader revealed his ProTour team was conserving its energy on today's stage, in the hope of conquering Saturday's climb - the only notable ascent in this year's race.

"It's not easy to go in the breakaways when we wear the yellow jersey," said Sprick. "I will not try and lose it, but today also we didn't try to defend it the same way we did yesterday. Now it's a question of keeping some strength for the second last stage."

The yellow jersey wasn't the only one to come under fire on today's fourth stage to Batu Pahat, with a fall just barely in the last three kilometres nearly ending Shinichi Fukushima's (Meitan Hompo - GDR) time in the Asian rider's jersey. The Japanese rider fell just within the three kilometre to go mark, allowing the rider to be allocated the same time as the bunch under UCI rules.

After being disappointed at not winning yesterday's stage, after being involved in a successful 100 kilometre-long break away, points classification leader Anuar Manan (Letua Cycling Team) suffered another setback after being caught in the bottle-neck finish on today's stage. Despite the set-back, Manan said he's delighted to be in the green sprinter's jersey

"In the last one kilometre I tried to go to the front, I was making my move but in the last 500 metres the road was getting narrower and I was caught behind," said Manan. "I'm happy to keep the green points jersey and tomorrow I hope to add some more points to make it safer."

How it unfolded

Some 145 riders lined up at the beach-side start line in Port Dickson, where the temperatures mirrored the previous two days. The assembled riders, after riding to the start line from their hotels for the first time this week, were uncertain about how the day would unfold following the surprisingly successful break away of five Asian riders on the previous day's stage.

The peloton set into a rhythm at a respectable pace, despite the roundabouts that lined the eight kilometre nuturalised section along the waterfront. After hitting the official start line on the outskirts of Port Dickson, the daily opening attack again came from an Asian rider, with Japan's Yukiya Arashiro (Meitan Hompo-GDR) taking eight seconds over the peloton.

The rider was joined by team-mate Takashi Miyazawa and Mehdi Sohrabi (Islamic Azad University). A chase by Vladimir Lopez (Polygon Sweet Nice) and Alejandro Paleo (Karpin Galicia) signaled the break's end, as the peloton closed in on the quartet.

Like many teams, Drapac Porsche also had some mechanical problems.

Activity at the forefront of the peloton initially indicated the stage would unfold in a similar manor to previous days, where a hot pace for the opening two hours has resulted in a break going away near the 100 kilometre mark before being reeled back. The peloton continued to travel at 60 kilometres an hour as the attacks continued to flow as the race returned to the turquoise-waters of the Andaman sea.

Five riders went clear as the race reached the 30 kilometre mark, before Jorg Lehmann (Team Ista) pulled away as the break was recaptured by the peloton. The rider pulled out over 10 seconds as the number of riders requiring rear wheel changes for punctures entered double figures.

As Lehmann was caught by the peloton it split into two, with 30 riders starting to shift forward from the remaining 115 riders. The move was quickly nuturalised as New Zealand National Team leader Jeremy Yates moved ahead of the field. Yates charged down the road with perfect timing, as the rider claimed the first sprint in his solo effort with Diego Nosotti (NGC Medical-OTC) taking second from Malaysian Ahmad Haidar Anuawar (Letua Cycling Team).

After Yates sat up and was caught by the peloton Danilo Hondo () attacked with Miyazawa and Blaise Sonnery (AG2R La Mondiale). For the second time as it passed thousands of school children lining the streets the peloton fractured in a doomed mass-break attempt.

The peloton's unrest continued over the following 10 kilometres, with a small group of nine riders gaining a marginal advantage over the peloton. Like those before it the move was brought back after gaining little more then a 10 second advantage.

With the peloton's average speed clocking in at 49 kilometres/hour, the day's first break went clear. A group of around 26 riders took a steady advantage over the peloton before Hondo showed his form by attacking the break, with the sprinter drawing out a 20 second lead over the break.

While Hondo's lead over the now 36-strong break held steady at 20 seconds, the German rider had gained an impressive 3'18 over the main peloton. Hondo's lead began to shrink, as the peloton swallowed the chase group in pursuit of the rouge sprinter.

As the peloton bit at Hondo's heels, with the German's lead margin all but gone, Crédit Agricole attacked the peloton and Hondo was again off in a new six-man break. Joining Hondo in the small group were Crédit Agricole's Jeremy Hunt and Nicolas Roche, general classification leader Mathieu Sprick (Bouygues Telecom), Mauro Abel Richeze (CSF Group-Navigare) and Japanese national champion Yukiya Arashiro (Meitan Hompo-GDR).

The new lead group gained a 27-second advantage as the peloton neared the feed zone. Comissaries cautioned teams to be careful while travelling through the feed zone, however the message fell on deaf ears as one rider hit the tarmac.

With a bag full of treats over each of their shoulders, the peloton resumed the pursuit of the six leaders. As the gap collapsed to 15 seconds it was evident the fourth stage wouldn't play out like the ones before it, and the six riders out front sat up and awaited the peloton's arrival.

It wasn't until kilometre 110 that a group would finally break away with the potential to prevent a bunch-sprint finish. The group included the likes of Simon Gerrens (Crédit Agricole), former winner David George (South Africa), Stef Clement (Bouguyes Telecom) and Australia's Simon Clarke (SouthAustralia.com-AIS).

While two riders initially attempted to cross to the bunch, the pair soon gave up. Just 12 kilometres later a smaller group of four riders - George, Francesco Tomei (CSF Group Navigare), Enrico Rossi (NGC Medical-OTC) and Clarke - broke away from the peloton, while further back general classification contender Mitchell Docker (Drapac-Porsche) fell hard after being left with nowhere to go as the peloton slowed.

The earth turned to a deep red as the peloton headed inland, while the leader's gap extended beyond 1'20. As the peloton's speed rose, Tinkoff Credit Systems showed signs of an organized assault for the first time this week as it headed the peloton. CSF Group-Navigare assisted with the hunt as the race reached the 132 kilometre mark, but the gap increased past the two minute mark.

Weary of the peloton's inability to control the gap, Sébastien Hinault (Crédit Agricole) and Mehdi Soharabi (Islamic Azad University) went off the front of the peloton to chase down the lead bunch. While the duo began making inroads, something clicked within the peloton and it surged forward, recaptured the two and charged forward for a sprint finish.

So late was the surge towards the line that it fractured rear of the peloton, with a handful of riders simply unable to keep the pace. The gap had came down to just inside two minutes with 15 kilometres remaining, a margin that was halved over the following five kilometres.

Asian classification leader Shinichi Fukushima (Meitan Hompo - GDR) came unstuck just inside the final three kilometres as the margin continued to drop. The Japanese rider's fortunate fall location means he's awarded the same time as the main bunch under the UCI's rules.

As the peloton headed over a bridge the lead group's hopes were all but over, with the riders being swallowed as the group descended the bridge onto the kilometre-long, funnel-shaped finish straight. While the bottle neck at 300 metres out ended the hopes of some sprinters, there was little that could be done to prevent Hondo from sprinting to a clear victory.

Mauro Abel Richeze (CSF Group Navigare) and Marco Corsini (NGC Medical - OTC Industria Porte) claimed third and fourth respectively, while officials rushed to assist three riders involved in an accident 200 metres out. The trio, which included Paul Odlin (New Zealand) and M. Zamani Mustarudin (MNCF Cycling Team), escaped any serious injuries, suffering minor cuts and bruises.

Despite being in two clear groups - separated by two bike lengths - 138 riders made it across the line in the sprint while Ryan Arihan (Letua Cycling Team), Rony Martias (Bouygues Telecom), William Ford (South Australia.com - AIS), Yoshinori Iino (Skil-Shimano) and Miyataka Shimizu (Meitan Hompo - GDR) trickled in over the following eight minutes.

Nico Keinath (Team Ista) and Hon Ying Yeung (Hong Kong National Team) managed to make the time cutoff, crossing the line over 20 minutes down during the presentation. South Americans Ruben Bongiorno (CSF Group Navigare) and Julio Cuapio Perez (CSF Group Navigare) didn't finish the day's stage.
